Cleaning the Edge Black 100% Domestic Wool Heavy Cut Pad

The best way to clean or remove built-up compound and polish residue as well as removed paint from a wool cutting pad is to use a pad washer. Currently there are two models of pad washers on the market, the Autogeek System 2000 Pad Washer and the Grit Guard Universal Pad Washer. Bot have unique design features and benefits.

The Lake Country System 2000 Pad Washer
This pad washer works with rotary buffers for cleaning either wool or foam buffing pads. It uses a 9 plastic gears, one of which is also a water pump to inject cleaning solution into the face of the buffing pad to help loosen and remove residues off the pad. Eight other plastic gears act to gently agitate and loosen product as well as fluff the yarn fibers of wool buffing pads.

System2000PadWassher001.jpg

If you look in the pictures below you'll see a gray colored larger gear separate from the smaller black gears. The holes you see in the gray gear act to bring water to the face of the pad when you place the buffing pad against the gear and bring up the RPM's of the buffer..

The Edge Black 100% Domestic Wool Heavy Cut Pad very thick pad and as such there was not enough vertical empty space inside the bucket to wash and then sling out any excess cleaning solution left in the pad. A perusal of the directions that come with the pad washer state you can adjust the legs on the base to increase or decrease the hight of the pad cleaning plate to accommodate different thicknesses in pads.

Note how this pad won't fit into the pad washer?

If you find that your pads are too thick for the factory preset hight, go retrieve the directions out of the wastepaper basket as they will tell you what I'm about to show you.

The legs between the base and the pad cleaning table are adjustable, all you need is s Phillips Screwdriver.
W5000DoubleSided020.jpg

Once you remove the screw on the outside you can then slide the leg up into the slot to a higher level to lower the pad cleaning plate further down into the bucket.

Then replace the assembled unit back into the bucket and press it down firmly till it bottoms out.
W5000DoubleSided023.jpg

It was a little snug going in but an easy task overall.
W5000DoubleSided024.jpg

When you go to put the lid back on, make sure you align the lid with the Gray Water Pump Wheel as the diagram from the directions shows and as I point out in the picture below.

After aligning the lid to the bucket, I flipped it upside down to show you how the housing clamps work to hold the lid to the bucket.

With the lid in place I again checked to see if there is enough vertical clearance to clean the pad and then lift it off the pad cleaning plate to sling out any excess cleaning solution and it looks to be a perfect fit.

The Grit Guard Universal Pad Washer
This pad washer can be used with all types of buffers and polishers both air powered or electric. It works well with both wool pads and foam pads.

GGUniversalPadWasher001.jpg

Inside are 4 spring loaded water cups and a Grit Guard Insert, (yellow component), and a Grit Guard Extension, (little black component in the middle of yellow Grit Guard Insert).

To clean a pad, simply place the buffing pad into the Grit Guard Pad Washer and close the Splash Guard. Then bring the RPM's up to a slow speed and at the same time, push the face of the buffing pad against the Grit Guard Insert and use a pumping motion to push the Grit Guard Insert against the spring loaded cups and this will activate the spring loaded cups to pump cleaning solution into the face of the buffing pad.

Mike,

I have an off topic, in a way, question. Are all wool pads only for compounding OR, are they able to be used for polishing/finishing?

Mike,

I have an off topic, in a way, question. Are all wool pads only for compounding OR, are they able to be used for polishing/finishing?

Depends upon the wool pad and also depends upon the users definition of a "good" finish.

There are wool cutting pad and there are wool polishing pads and there are also both styles of pads which are a blend of natural wool fibers and man-made synthetic fibers.

Cutting pads are generally used for removing serious paint defects or sanding marks and polishing pads are used to refine the finish left by the compound and cutting pad to a more clear, higher gloss.

The answer to your question is yes if the person is using a wool polishing pad.

The answer is no for most of us if the person is using a wool cutting pad but yes for the person that thinks leaving swirls in the surface is a "good" finish. This type of person may be doing their finishing work with a wool cutting pad.

I have more articles to write that will include more wool cutting pads and wool polishing pads and this will bring a lot more information on these products to the forum.

There will also be more articles on foam pads too.

:)

Well, the one I have, and love using, is the purple buffing/polishing pad. It does not burn the paint and takes out scratches very well. Is there a more finishing pad after using the purple one?

That purple pad corrected this without any problems:
