The feel of Menzerna FG 400 and SF 4000

Hi Mike,

I've always been a loyal user of Meguiars polishes and compounds but I wanted to try out Menzernas products and bought FG400 and SF4000.
I haven't tried them out yet but the feeling, or texture if you like, when grinding the two products between your fingers, it seems like SF4000 has more "particles" or grit in it than FG400.
FG400 feels more smooth than SF4000 and in feels like it should be the other way around.
The SF4000 feels more like Meg's M101 and the FG400 feels more like M205 if that makes more sense when trying to describe it.

This is actually a very good article that will explain the differences in the products. Their differences are in technology (SMAT vs DAT) and are on a microscopic level. Not sure how your fingers can feel that, moreover I normally wear 9mm nitrile gloves when working with product for protection so I obviously haven't done the tests you have.

Anyway, this is a good read and very educational.

i was a big fan of Meguiars until i started using Menz. M105 is a good compound when you figure out how to get it to work right, FG400 is a lot easier to work with and if finished down better. i think SF4000 blows M205 out of the water.

Menz products have a longer working time and if working on a PC or GG6 will take longer to break down.

It could just be me, but I seem to get much refinement from SF4000 as well. I did my mom, and her neighbors cars with the M105/205 and If they are 10/10, then the cars I've done with FG400/SF4000 are like 12/10. Just my experience. I love m205, but the SF4000 gives me a little more of what I'm looking for.

I don't want to do six passes if I am done cutting after four

I find M205 yields the same result in fewer passes


When comparing FG400 to M100, I do not value the almost LSP ready finish you get after 6-8 passes with FG400

For me it is still ALMOST LSP ready and still requires an additional step

I prefer 4 passes with M100, four with M205 vs a total of 12 passes with FG/SF combination


I am not DAT Guy anymore

I do agree that if you have unlimited time, DAT is the obvious choice

If I'm using pads like the Lake Country Hydrotech with the Menzerna, it doesn't take long at all to break them down - in my experience. The stiffer make up of the pad efficiently works the polishes in an acceptable amount of time.

That being said, they also work well with my staple green and blue b&s foams, but do take longer to break down. I prefer SMAT products with the open cell pads.

As far as finishing with M205, not being on par with SF4000, the blue pad probably has too much cut. Switching to a grey pad will probably yield more gloss.
