Hello everyone! I've doing a lot of reading on a variety of products specifically for the detailing world and some products not necessarily designated for use in detailing like xylene and isopropyl alcohol. I know there are a few acid based wheel cleaners out there too.

My question to everyone is: What is the the strongest product you use when you detail and what do you use it for? Thanks to all that reply. -Ed

Some products/chemicals are not considered to be the "strongest" in their genre,
but can be among the most hazardous/toxic/etc.
Example: Hydrofluoric Acid (HF)

Some of the chemicals', (that are contained in detailing products), "characteristics" include, but are not limited to:

Physical hazards:
-explosive, flammable

Health hazards:
-Toxic; corrosiveness (to skin); irritants (to skin, eyes);
sensitizers; carcinogenic; aspiration

Environmental hazards:
-Air quality; aquatic toxicity

Always refer to products' MSDS' and their ingredients/chemicals CAS#'s for this all-important information.

ZEP Ultra Concentrated Purple Degreaser. I use it for bus chassis degreasing but it's way too strong (caustic) to safely use on a regular basis and shouldn't be used for auto detailing in general. Get this stuff on your skin and it will turn your skin to slime upon contact.

ZEP Citrus Degreaser on the other hand is quite mild and in different dilutions works great for a variety of auto detailing chores.

Anything that's very basic or acidic. So probably acidic wheel cleaners and basic degreasers.

May be off topic but, If anyone is into boats, the product "on off" is insane as far as intensity goes. Spray on the hull and watch the vapors emit immediately. Along with the toughest of stains.

Hydrofluoric acid - wheel cleaner
Sodium hydroxide - wheel cleaner, APC, snow foams
Xylene - body prep solvent
MEK - body prep solvent, adhesive remover
Toluene - body prep solvent

Too many more to list.

One thing is for sure you should always ware gloves when detailing.

Iron X, Zep Purple, Sonax FE, Megs Wheel Brightener all smell like they can cause some harm if inhaled.

For 7 years when I worked for Ford I bathed in this stuff daily:

No wonder I get the night terrors.

Jomax roof cleaner is up there. They tell you to mix Jomax/Bleach/Water and that stuff will take off just about anything it touches.

They tell you to mix Jomax/Bleach/Water and that stuff will take off just about anything it touches.

This Jomax product contains:
-Acetic acid: CAS# 64-19-7...(also found in vinegar)

-o-Phenylphenate, sodium: CAS# 132-27-4...this is the toxic, cancer-causing chemical!!

(It's used as a: fungicide; mold inhibitor; preservative)

The pH of this product is:
-3.0-3.5 not mixed with bleach/water
-9.1-9.4 when mixed with bleach/water

A "Bad azz"-product...that performs as advertised.

We have an AGO forum member that goes by the forum name: JOMAX.
He's also a "Bad Azz"...that performs as advertised!! :D

FUNX725, are you the in house chemist? You know a lot, and I enjoy your informative posts.

I, too, read up on MSDS's on products that I am considering buying for specific tasks. I also want to make sure it's safe on paint or whatever else I am working on. I saw the MSDS for ZEP Purple. Really nasty stuff.

Today, I put in 3 ounces of Permatex/Spray Nine APC to 3 gallons of water along with 3 ounces of Meg's wash and wax. The APC gave it a nice cleaning boost, but pretty much removed the waxing abilities of the soap. The addition of the APC made removal of 4 week old bug splatter less of a challenge and my concoction worked almost as good as CarPro's Snow Soap which I ran out of. :(

I'm extremely careful with adhesive removers/ tar removers. Most contain benzine which is a known carcinogen. Always gloves with that stuff.

I found the normal cleaner with the green label barley does anything. The roof cleaner with the orange/brown label is like a night and day difference. Sadly I don't wear anything when using it although I probably should.
