thanks to the fast & furious, more and more innocent people are at risk of getting injured (or even killed) because of morons like these. this reckless activity/behavior seems to be going on weekly. we need (significantly more) strict law & order here in the USA in all aspects of illegal activity...

Street takeover in downtown L.A. leaves two cars in flames

An illegal street takeover in downtown Los Angeles early Saturday morning left two vehicles engulfed in flames.

Police were summoned to the intersection of West 18th and Main streets near the 10 Freeway at 2:49 a.m. and found “in excess of 50 cars,” said LAPD Officer Norma Eisenman.

Two sedans were burning as a stream of traffic weaved around them, according to video from OnSceneTV. Hundreds of spectators were on hand, according to KTLA.

Firefighters extinguished the vehicles, which were towed from the scene. There were no injuries or arrests.

Street takeovers, also known as sideshows, in which souped-up cars spin around in intersections, burning tires, to the delight of fans, are under increasing scrutiny in L.A. Hundreds occur every year with some resulting in deadly crashes and shootings. The City Council launched a pilot program earlier this year to combat illegal takeovers by installing hardened center lines at certain intersections to deter stunt.

Though the pilot program included several downtown intersections, the location of Saturday’s fire was not one of them.

This has really gotten out of hand. Doing donuts/hooning your car is one thing, but when you put others at risk and destroy property then that is where the line is drawn. Its rampant in northern california as well.

We do get some illegal hooning events here, but if the police get intelligence ahead of time they will wait till everyone has gathered then shut down all routes in and out, and the hoons make this easy because they usually try to go somewhere remote with only one or two roads in and out. Every vehicle and driver is then checked over before they leave, including breathalyzer and drug test, different to laws here mean they're allowed.

Also lots of people now have dashcams, if you do a burnout and someone posts it up with your number plate visible, you can probably expect a visit from the police, and they don't even need to prove who the driver was, they can still confiscate the vehicle, and if the driver has a history of hooning, they can crush it.

But I'm sure it still happens here, the smart ones never get caught, they don't do it where the public can see them.

We do have the Summernats here, basically a sanctioned hooning event, with a car show attached, but they have a lot of trouble with the visitors copying what they've seen as they're leaving, so they've just brought in new laws with very harsh penalties.

The most we get in my local neighbourhood is late night burnouts that you can hear off in the distance, and then you see the fresh black lines on the road the next morning.
