Tint removal?

I have the windows of my '00 cavalier tinted by a shop. It needs to have the door windows' tint replaced. The shop quoted me $50 for both doors. I thought of having the tint completely removed and just leave it off. I'm hoping to trade it in in a couple years anyways. If I do decide to remove it, could I do it myself? I am leery of the back window's defroster grid and understandably do not want to ruin it. Or should I just see what the shop would charge for removing it?:confused: Thanks. I forgot to mention the windows have been tinted since '01.
 
window tint that has been set in for that long is definitely a pain to remove...just take it to a tint shop and most will remove it at a very reasonable price...its not hard to do it yourself...just a pain...
 
a very messy job, most tint places now sell a spray that helps in removal. Its kinda like wallpaper remover.
 
We live in Ohio, but have not been hassled by the constabulary. My windows were tinted because of my eyes being light sensitive (winter is worse than summer) and are at 35% LT. I still don't know what I'll do yet.
 
you should do a search on google for window tint removal. The rear is going to be the hardest, other wise pick a corner get a flat single edge razor blade and start peeling. It works if better if you do it on a hot day after the car has been in the sun for a few hours. U can also use a hair dryer instead of the sun. But do the search I rememeber reading some detailed instructions somewhere.
 
Danke. I will look, as I bought a small bottle of removal solution at Advance today, along with a three pack of lint free towels just in case.:cheers:
 
Try this first.....
This is what I do. Works wonders on the rear, PIA, windows.

Take a BLACK, construction trash bag. Big ones.
Place it on the rear window...the outside. Cut out the shape of the glass.
Get a spray, Windex w/alcohol or some other spray not intended for tint will work. Spray the back glass generously. Get it nice and wet. Take the bag and stick it on the inside of the back window. The wet window will hold it in place. Now park the car in the sun, back window towards the sun. Let it set for an hour or two. Go out and peel off the tint. Tadaaa

It's (almost all) off.:( I was off today and my wife had to work so I decided to go ahead and take the tint off. The rear window I left alone now, but whenever the weather gets a bit more sunny I will do the trash bag trick. I think I'll just leave the windows like they are, and not have them re tinted. Don't get me wrong, I liked having the windows done, but it was such a pain in the winter with fogging and also not being able to clean them easily. The next car I look at in a couple/three years I'll just leave the windows alone on that, also. Thanks for all the input.:awesome: :grouphug:
