Hello,

First post here, great forum!

So, I have four VERY small tears in my leather console/armrest (09 Tahoe) that I have no idea where they came from.

The largest tear is about 3/16".

I would appreciate any help on how to repair them, I want to take care of them soon so that they don't get any larger!

Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion, I have seen this but was unsure about it based on the mixed reviews. Have you used it? I would appreciate any tips on using the product correctly. Thanks again!

Yes. Just follow the instructions. Pretty straight forward. Use as little of the colored product as possible. Less is more.

You mean replace the console lid? I'll check that out too, thanks for the suggestion!

I had a Maxima that suddenly got a crack on the center console lid. I tried a repair kit and never got it to look right. This was ten years ago so maybe the process is better these days. Anyway I removed the pleather cover from the lid and took it to a lady advertising sewing/repairs on CL. She used the old piece as a form and made me a new one for twenty bucks.

my friend burnt my console in my brand new charger,I ordered a console lid for 26.00 on eBay .

I recently used the 3M kit to repair a big tear in a leather drivers seat, as well as some smaller tears.

Bottom line: the kit will repair the tears, thereby keeping them from getting worse, but it won't 'look like new'. It looks better than duct tape for sure, but it won't fool anyone into thinking its new leather. I repaired the leather on the drivers seat that gets worn from the driver getting in the car, and so far it has lasted 6 months, so it appears fairly durable.

That being said, I basically followed the directions. The way it works is you use the included fabric, and what appears to be very thick Elmer's Glue to fill the tear and level it off. Once dry, you cover it with colored rubber material that looks like thick paint. You basically vulcanize it using a hot metal spatula and a card that adds grain look.

I found that the iron method in the instructions did not apply enough heat, so I used a cigar lighter directly on the metal 'spatula' to get it hot, then rubbed it on the grain card that was pressing into the leather. It took a while to cure the colored material, which goes from sticky to smooth once it cures.

The critical bit is leveling with the 'glue'; it took me several attempts, waiting for it to dry between attempts.

Sorry I don't have photos because the car is not available right now.

Thanks for all of the input guys. I ordered the 3m kit and will give that a try, I am hoping that since the tears are so small the repair won't be too noticeable. I looked on ebay and replacement lids are around $250. That being said, I am a bit of a neat freak and like things to look good, so if I cannot do a satisfactory job on the repair than I will probably just replace the lid! :)
