I don't know about you, but I'm getting fed up having a Tip Jar jammed in my face everywhere I make a purchase. Don't get me wrong I am a strong believer in tipping when the time is appropriate, but I shouldn't feel forced to tip when no viable service has been preformed

What are your thoughts on Tip Jars?

I absolutely agree with you. Why should I leave a tip when they are not providing a service to me other then taking my order and payment.

You know what else is annoying? When you are constantly being asked for donations for local traveling soccer, baseball, and softball youth travel teams. The kids parents should be the ones that are paying. I paid for all my kids. Just a pet peeve I have. Just like those landscapers with the blowers and weed wackers. Just annoying getting my recently detailed cars getting the dirt on them. I can keep going on.

Tip jars, I love 'em. They have them where I get my coffee. Order it up....lotsa cream and sugar...please... Lady tells me it's $1.59. Then, she goes back to pour the coffee, and I grab 2 bills out of the tip jar to pay her. I get free coffee and make 41¢.

Go ahead bro. You are amongst friends/family here. Let it ALL out

:)

I know what you are saying Bro. I was a the local Wegmans grocery store and when I checked out they asked me if I wanted my remaining change to be donated to end world hunger. That is just ridiculous. I asked the lady is she was for real, and she just laughed, and said that they are told to ask.

It bothers me to see churches having car washes/bake sales. It's a shame a church has to look to the outside world to support their missions. If their members were doing what they were suppose to be doing this wouldn't be necessary

Where do you find a cup of coffee for $1.59?

Ridiculous is the word. I've started avoiding business' that practice this method of hounding their customers for MORE MONEY. If you find a cause you believe in YOU SUPPORT IT

That was pretty funny

I was in a SELF SERVE yogurt place that had a tip jar at the register.

I see them on some service counters (bars, coffee places) but not "in my face".

Yeah... You can't even run through a drive through at the local fast food joint without being asked for a donation for something or other.

Go to Wal-Mart, they hit you up for a donation at the register, walk out of the store, there's someone asking for a donation at the front doors, drive out of the parking lot, there's a group of people with slotted coffee cans asking passing cars for donations.

Go the the pet store to get Colt the Bolt his good "Bil-Jac" dog food, they want a donation, get home, the Fraternal Order of Police are on the phone, guilting you into making a donation, (these guys are the worst)...it just doesn't stop...everyone, everywhere, wants a donation, so no one gets a donation.

I do give monetary donations to causes I believe in... I've gotten calloused as far as the donations go, I've learned to "Just say NO".

As far as tips go...the waiter or waitress gets 15-20% and the barber gets a few bucks.

This is what I am talking about. How STUPID must a business owner be to allow this?

Next to the cash register with all kinds of sayings drawn on it is considered IN MY FACE to me

Get that crap off the counter if you want me to continue doing business with your establishment

The pet store I frequent has a jar, but that money goes to one of the local rescue groups. I don't have a problem at all with this and am glad they have it there. I make a donation and am happy to do so in honor of my pets and the joy they bring me. The lady that brings my newspaper EVERY MORNING (yes, I still read the newspaper) always leaves me a cheesy ChristX card around that time of year, I get the message and am happy to oblige her cuz I see the crappy car she drives and she's here EVERY MORNING regardless. Waiters/Waitresess get 20% or more

Everyone else can KICK BRICKS!

A couple of years ago I got into a pretty good brouhaha with a young lady at an Exxon. After taking on fuel, paid by plastic at the pump, I went inside to purchase a refreshing cup of coffee and a snack. Including tax the total was $2.55.

I handed the young lady a five...I was handed back two $1 bills while hearing the thunk of my 45 cents in change go into a jar by the register.

"I beg your pardon, that's my change and I prefer to take it along with me...rather than it being put in that tip-jar"...I politely said.

"But Sir: That's not really a tip-jar. All of the donations in this jar goes towards the clean-up of the wildlife that's been affected by the oil-spills"...she tried to explain.

"WTC"!!!.
"Gouge; Ironic; etc."...I heard myself saying aloud---emotions all but lost on the hapless Lass. Accordingly:
There was pert-near the need for a clean-up at register #1...

Whew!!
I think I need to go get me a donut and some cocoa.
Let me see how much change I have.

Bob

The stigma of not tipping in general is BS. People in jobs like waitressing try to claim it is your duty to subsidize their wage and it is not. If the employee’s tips combined with the employer’s direct wages of at least $2.13 per hour do not equal the federal minimum hourly wage ($7.25 right now), the employer must make up the difference. Don't like it? don't work a minimum wage job OR earn the tip.

I will tip if the service is above and beyond what you would normally expect but to expect a tip to me is crazy. Heck I go above and beyond in all the jobs I do and I don't look for a tip.

Any tip jars at places like self serve is just insane. I know my opinion is not the popular one but you have to work for your money, if you aren't being paid something you feel ok with and expect subsidization by the customer not your employer things are a little upside down. We choose our prices based on what we end up making per hour, how do you think it would work out if we offered to work at a next to nothing rate and asked for tips?

i went to joe's crab shack last night with my nephew and family friend and while they were busy, their service wasn't very good as well as the food. on the bottom of the bill was a suggested gratuity which i felt wasn't even close to giving given the service we received. can't say i'll ever go back again...

Interesting. Exxon wants U.S. to pay for THEIR mistake

I was not aware the restaurant industry worked this way. I was always under the assumption waiters/waitresses worked for pennies per hour and relied HEAVILY on tips

BTW I think everyone should tip their detailer handsomely

:)

We should have Tip Jars and if the vehicle needs a lot of extra work. We should include it in the gratuity bill lol (kidding)

Years, years back I was driving one day and exited the fwy to go to my destination. This guy was asking for money and was holding a sign, it said something along the lines of "Need money for food, I accept cash, Visa and Mastercard"

haha it made me laugh so I gave him some money and a little extra for making me laugh lol. I should go back and tell him to include PayPal to keep up with the times. Even funnier would be if it said to add him on FaceBook. hahahahahahaha

This thread reminds me of Peter Griffin with "do you know what really grinds my gears?" haha

I assume some waitresses don't even know that the employer is required to make up the difference and others are afraid to ask. It's something to keep in mind next time a waitress tells you they rely on tips.

Relying on tips is a flawed argument from the start, I rely on customers, it doesn't mean I expect them to repeat business if I do a poor job or pay me extra for the job I do. I'd love if they would all tip though, some interiors can drive me crazy with my OCD.

I do tip when eating out. But tip jars? NO. No one tips me at my job.
