I'll try to make this short. Brand new Nissan Altima was picked up a week ago. Yesterday while washing it I noticed the problem. I could not get it out so I decided to take it to the dealer where I bought it. After they tried a few different things and couldn't get it they took it to there body shop. Apparently they claim its the tire shine stuff they used and it sticks to plastic. They claim there is no way to remove it with any product. There solution is to sand it down and reapply the base coat or something along those lines. They said they will not be sanding down the paint. I've been told on other forums not to let the dealer touch the car but don't know what to do. The pics don't show it very well but this stuff looks baked in. What can I try at home?

Should mention it only sticked to the plastic. Its on all 4 wheel wells and even under the doors. There was some on the doors but I can remove that by just rubbing at it.

The dealership has taken responsibility but I don't know if there option is my best option.

Jeez what kind of tire shine embeds itself in paint.

Well I was just told there is a service bulletin on Nissans site about this. Saying how you should not use tire dressing as it can stain the paint.

Thanks Nissan. I didn't even use it, the dealership did.

Must be crap paint, if tire shine cant be removed.. Hard to believe
Or nasty tire shine...

Most tire shine products say they may stain the paint..
By your pic's it looks more like some kind of under coating ?
Was it under coated at dealer ?
I work at local chrysler dealer for 35 years, and lots of diff products and tire shine have come and gone, and never have i seen one that caused damage of not being able to remove, and/or stained..
If they have to sand down, I would demand New trim were it is, if replacable.. If they deny, i would contact nissan..

I could potentially see this if the dressing was solvent or hexane based.

Um. Quite frankly, I'd demand a new car.

Obviously, this is some type of solvent based dressing that penetrates white paint and stains it. A water based dressing, like Opti Bond, wouldn't do this.

So, they sold you a car with a staining chemical dealer applied to all 4 wheels. Now they want to do some type of body shop work to fix it? No thanks. Car will prolly rust in 5 years from the wheel wells where their body shop touched.

If there detailing department sucks this bad - what do you think their body shop is like????

If it was me, I'd try something like Tar X + a paint cleaner on it - but that's it.

Bottom line - they screwed up your new car.

They need to make it right.

Huh?

No products I use or AG sells say they may stain paint. OK, well there prolly is one exception in fine print someplace. But - be for real, quality water based dressings don't stain paint.

I think the dressings he speaks of, which would have this printed on the label, are from big box type stores.

It does look like undercoating and acts like it. I don't think its coming off. However it most definitely is the dressing. I had those spots all over the door and they came off. My door is metal and they rubbed off. The bottom panel below the door is plastic. They will not come off. Same as the wheel well.

Actually I had Black Onyx do this to White Toyota paint. It was single stage paint, not sure if that makes a difference or not. I al it's always use 303 and never have that problem.

Great that the dealership doesn't read their own bulletins. I'm with Sonicyouth. It's a brand new car. They should have known better. The only way to fix it is to sand it down and repaint. I wouldn't want any part of a brand new car repainted. This is 100% on them. I would ask the dealership to do the right thing, if they won't work your way up the ladder. I'm thinking Nissan would kind of frown on a dealership that doesn't pay any attention to service bulletins.

What do I ask for at this point? I could ask for new panel as its only the plastic parts. That would only include two bottom door trims and the whole front. I am pretty sure the grill is separate. I haven't checked the bumper to see if there are any spots.

But even if they agree to that. How would that look. Are the parts the same color as mine right now? Could they install the front and have it line up all perfectly? I already checked the parts online and they only about $600 from U.S Nissan. I'm in Canada so they probably more.

I'd ask for new Nissan OEM color matched parts. That would be the best way to go.

It's up to you. Personally I would be asking for a new car. That is the fender I'm seeing with stains correct? Can you list all the parts that are affected? Whenever they start taking things apart and putting them back together things usually don't end up perfect. Sometimes you don't notice for a couple months. I'm talking from personal experience. If they do end up replacing parts I would make sure they have a lifetime warranty on their work.

I don't have much hope in getting a new car. If possible I would push for one.

Parts effected are only plastic. Non of the metal is effected because it comes off metal.

1. Front Bumper. The front wheel well is pretty bad so the whole front bumper would need replacing.

2. Both bottom plastic pieces that run underneath the doors. Just run underneath the doors.

3. Square mud guards protecting the back bumper

4. Didn't notice anything on the back bumper but I have to take a better look.

Looks like undercoating, id contact an aftermarket undercoating place near you and see if they have anything to get it removed.

I just noticed this. Unbelievable. They must of did this yesterday trying to get the spots off.

This is becoming a nightmare. I don't know what to do now.

I don't even have written admission of guilt so if I push for something more they might start denying.

That is an amazing repair. I would be very happy with the results :(

I would move this up the chain to Nissan. You can also get the BBB involved, but that may take time and money in the long run.

The dealership clearly doesn't know what they are doing and they have made it worse. You have before and after pics. That should be enough proof that they botched it.

That was just them trying to figure out what it was. I guess after they rubbed the paint off they figured the stuff wont come off and thats when they said they'll paint it.

I can say from experience that most auto body shops dealerships use are reputable and can repaint that stuff to OEM specs without issue.
