What can be used on truck tonneau covers to protect and give them some shine without running down the sides if the bed from the dew or rain.I have tried PB trim restorer which was recommended at one time but it made a mess also.I have a lot of customers with trucks and covers including my own and for now have been hitting them with a little QD for now.I have been using my truck as a test mule and every product makes a mess down the paint when it rains. Any good suggestions would be appreciated.

I tried every product to come down the pike for years without satisfactory results. I gave up for quite a while and settled for the just-clean look, no dressing. I'm not wild about a high shine anyway but I really prefer some protection. After seeing glowing reviews I tried this:

Ultima Tire & Trim Guard Plus, tire & trim protectant, tire dressing, rubber protectant

The stuff has been on the tonneau for a couple of months without running in rain or dew. Beads primo and a wipe with a MF after application gets rid of the high shine if that's your preference. I'm now using this on all exterior trim and tossed a giant box of trim products in the garbage. YMMV.

I used 303 on my tonneau, and liked it. I sprayed it on a microfiber sponge and wiped it on. Maybe having the truck garaged helps with the running problem, but I don't think it ran at all, and it lasted good imo.

This is exactly what I was thinking about while walking away from my truck into my office building this morning! I've already been contemplating adding Ultima Tire & Trim Guard Plus to my next order and now I suppose I'll have to. Those streaks down the side of my truck bed are ridiculous.

What really confuses me, is that after the last wash I didn't treat the tonneau at all and it STILL streaked. I'm stumped as to why it streaked this time considering the last time it was treated was almost a year ago....

I use 303 AP on my vinyl convertible top, I rub it in good with a microfiber sponge (spray on sponge not on top) and let it dry good overnight and I have never had a problem with it running onto the paint after a rain. It has a little shine but not too much.

A friend of mind has a 2010 Silverado he put an aftermarket tonneau on and he didn't treat it with anything and the first rain something ran all over the sides. There must have been something on it when he bought it. I suggested he clean it with APC+ and treat with 303. He cleaned it twice then used the 303 this past weekend. I'm waiting for a report back from him but I don't think it's rained yet

I'm interested in this too. My mom's Tacoma has an "Undercover" tonneau cover and it is showings its age. I need something to get it back to black without leaving black lines down the side of the truck when it rains.

Just to chime in...

One of the issues you're trying to overcome is absorbency, any product that isn't absorbed "into" the vinyl material is going to tend to want to come off when exposed to inclement weather and/or washing with soap and water.

Modern vinyls don't appear to be as absorbent as vinyl materials used 10 and 20 years ago, this is just my observation from owning lots of vinyl convertible tops and tonneau covers, but I could be wrong.

Water based dressings will be much more likely to wash off versus solvent based dressings, I don't maintain lists of what's water-based and what's solvent based, so this is just a "mention" for food for thought...

And for what it's worth, always hated trying to remember how to spell tonneau...
