Hi all.

I've taken my Tornado Red 2016 MK7 VW GTI with about 10k miles to a very well renowned detailer in our country, based on numerous reviews and galleries of his work.

Unfortunately i don't have any before pictures, but the car was put once through automatic car wash before pick up, after that it was washed only by hand, altough not using the correct 2 bucket method at the time.

The guy warned me that this paint is hard like a rock and recommended 2 stage polish but ended up doing 3 stage polish with 2 layers of wax. I don't know if i should be satisfied with the outcome because that is my first car i've had detailed, but for my taste the swirls are still too much apparent, especially on the hood under the direct sunlight, the other panels are not so bad though.

I've attached some close up shots bellow, but here is also the link to the pictures in bigger resolution.

I would like to hear your opinions before i give the guy a "hard time". It is just me expecting too much, or the results should really be better for a 400 dollars detailing job.

My experience with the new VW's has been the opposite. Normally on the softer side, 4-6/10 tops, very manageable.

Just curious, but how many times has it been washed since it was corrected and waxed?

What have you used for wash solution, media (mitt/sponge/etc), and drying towels/process?

Just trying to get the full picture.

Oneheadlite asked a great question, let's assume this is untouched, and how you received it. I would be pissed after a "3" step correction. What country are you in? What was he using? I have gotten better resulte doing a an AIO basic detail. By the way, I have a silver MK7 GTI

Continuing on with your assumption, I would not be happy either.

I have a black MK6 GTI and have been able to get swirls like those out pretty easily using Blackfire SRC Compound on an LC white pad...a one step job. At the recommendation of Dave from LC, I've also been able to get similar results using the Blackfire SRC Polish on an LC Flat orange pad. Again, a one step job. The paint is very hard, but not unmanageable if you use the right products. If it was softer, it would be an even easier job.

It hasn't been washed since detailing was done. The detailer is on vacations at the moment, so i will know more details about the stuff used when he comes back next week. I have appointment with him anyway, because there are also some wax residues on hood that needs to be corrected.

Hi, welcome to AutoGeekOnline. It's unfortunate to see this as your first post.

I have worked on a few VW's and found that the paint has been pretty easy to correct. With his 3 step process he should have gotten 95% defect removal or better. That third picture looks like it wasn't really touched.

Please follow up and how this turns out. BTW, where are you located? Perhaps an active forum member is willing to help you correct the paint.

Pm me the shop name or website. I have no intention of naming him or trashing him I'm just curious if I can dig around and figure out what he uses

I've seen some of his work on other VW's and it looked flawless, it's just the Tornado Red that's so hard as i've been told. Did you did some Tornado Red too? I'm from Slovenia.

No i did silver it was definitely not my first choice I wanted either white and black blue and then silver but it was so hard to find a 2 door with a stick shift with the Plaid interior

I'm really confused now. Found some pictures of work done by the same detailer on almost exactly the same car as mine (same model & color, just with the diesel engine) and it looks so much better, though the photos are taken from greater distance than mines. Unless those halogens don't bring swirls out so much as the sunlight?

I had a mk7 GTI in night blue metallic. M205(fine polish) and white pad(polishing pad) was all that was needed to remove defects very similar to yours. Thats one step....

Sorry to say but no way this detailer performed a 3 step.

My friend has a tornado red R and he got the same results from a fine polish and white polishing pad - although of a different brand

That's so freaking weird, i really don't know what went wrong.

That guy has like a 5-star rating, and it was recommended to me from multiple sources as being one of the best, if not the best detailer in our country.

He seems like a nice and reasonable guy though, so i hope i can find a solution with him.

Too bad i don't have any before pictures, but as i've said, the car was through auto car wash once, and then washed maybe 5-6 times by hand (except rinsed with a pressure washer) with some normal "cheap" sponge and wiped to dry with chamois. I have better equipment now (sheep mitt, microfiber towels, 2 buckets with grit guards etc.), but now my car doesn't look the way i want.

I own 2 mk7s both black, but I have polished a grey and red one. Easy easy easy imo.

Mk7 paint is very soft, scratches and chips easy..but corrects quick especially with microfiber cutting pads.

I can get an almost flawless finish with a few different combos on a mk7 but my go to now are Rupes foam pads and polish.

For someone that is renowned of there work and knowledgable,3 step for 400 is on the cheap side and wouldn't protect all his with wax.I would wash or strip the car and see what's really going on.He is not gonna give you a refund but if he is any kind of business man that wants to protect his reputation he will make it right.

I checked out his page. He looks the part. I can't figure out what went wrong. It is clear most of us would never deliver a car like that. Give him a chance to redo it.

I wouldn't expect or demand refund by any chance. The car still looks much better than it was, the color tone and depth is excellent, it's just the swirls that are still bothering me.

The problem is that i didn't know what to expect prior picking up the car, but after few days i just couldn't loose the feeling that something is not how it should be.

Big thanks too all of you for warm welcome and help with confirming my suspicions, i will keep you updated on how things will resolve with the detailer.

I have worked on a dozen or more MK7 GTi's, most red and everyone of them had very hard paint. No idea howcome certain people are claiming soft, never encountered soft paint on them, unless certain countries got soft paint?

Assuming you've had the car for 12 months and also assuming that the car had been washed and dried through an automated touchless wash several times (I don't know if those are true, but I'm trying to think worst case scenario where you'd have the most swirls and blemishes on a car that's a year old), I would not be happy with those results at all if he did a three-step process.
