Cars for The Art of Polishing Paint Advanced Class #1


Here are two of the cars my class will get to work on when learning the art and craft of polishing paint.


Modern Cars
I try to always have a "new" or modern car because these are they types of cars most detailers will be working on in their business.

Special Interest Vehicles
I also as a practice, include SIV's or Special Interest Vehicles in all my classes for a number of reasons,
1. Cool Factor - Everyone that's ever been to one of my classes always comments how they love working on cool cars.

2. Large - I need a big car so everyone has plenty of hand-on time

3. Unique Experience - Autogeek is all about the car hobby in all its dimensions and we want everyone that invests the time, energy and investment to attend one of our classes to have a GREAT time with skills and memories that will last a lifetime.

Heck no...

When I buff out classics like this whatever I'm doing the major correction step with is also used to buff over the chrome or stainless.

That's what I did for this 1955 Ford Crown Victoria....

I also applied the Dodo Juice Hard Candy Hard wax to all the trim to help seal it.


That's why I LOVE working on classics, no stupid plastic trim to tape off or even worry about...

Whew, I'm so glad to hear that. I'll be working on this real soon. Maybe not as much chrome but still enough to be a pain.
 
The trim on these classic Buick's isn't bad at all, from memory there's a strip of door ding absorbing vinyl down the center of the body trim surrounded by chrome trim. Just buff up to the trim, not over it and you'll be fine.

Here's some shots of the 1964 Malibu, I had a hard time getting really good shots of the orange peel even though in person it's easy to see with the naked eye...

One of the things I show guys when buffing out classics, antiques and muscle cars is the body panels don't always align evenly. It's important to be aware of this when sanding AND running a rotary buffer so you don't run the edge of your buffing pad into the edge of the panel and burn through the edge.

Convertibles

When it comes to convertibles you can detail them with the top up or the top down. IF you detail them with the top down you need to cover and protect the interior. A plastic drop cloth works well for this...

If you detail a convertible with the top up then you need to tape-off and also cover the convertible top to protect it from compound and polish splatter. A plastic drop cloth also works well for this.

Removing scratches out of flexible plastic windows
Often times you'll find scratches and oxidation on older cars or Jeeps with flexible plastic windows. The back window in this top needs some serious work and I'll show my class how to go about restoring flexible plastic windows during this class.

I many have another advanced class like this coming up in the near future that focuses primarily on the art of polishing paint, this class was a really good opportunity to learn a lot of tools, pads, products and procedures.
