Decided to do a little comparison between Duragloss 271 Rubber bumper and flat black trim dressing and the Ultima tire and trim guard plus.

Here are the weapons of choice

Initial observations:

First off the weather was sunny but cold. Air temps of around 38*F. I don't know what effect the cold weather may have on either product but I want to acknowledge that the temps were cold.

The DG 271 was not quite as thick as UTTG but similar in the fact that a little goes a long long way. The DG271 actually had a little run-off because I got a little too generous with my application; I did not observe any run-off with the UTTG. I would attribute this to the fact that the slightly thicker composition of UTTG prevented this. Using the foam paint brush really allows me to control the product and get in tight little spaces with the angled tip without disturbing the surrounding area.

I will report back after one week to check in on durability. We are expecting some rain and snow in that time period, so it should be a good test. I will plan to follow up at one month as well, which should allow for one or two washes to potentially affect the durability of both products.

One last pic, while not the best in detail, shows a 50/50 of a wiper arm. The left side was not treated. The right side was treated with UTTG around 3 weeks ago. The product was exposed to sun, rain, snow, and washing in that time period. The pic may not fully show the results, but the UTTG treated side of the arm is even in color, flat black, and clean.

Excellent work M!

Thanks so much for writing this up and posting. Can't wait to follow the durability Im the MAN

Thanks again and Merry Christmas!

Thanks for the pic's _M_ .
Look as if the DG271 applied a lil' streakier than the UTTG ?

Great work M, thank you for taking the time to provide us with such a detailed report. Can't wait to see the follow up reports:props:

Very interesting, thanks for the write up. You really applied those thick! :wow:

Great post...Looking forward to seeing how these two products compare in durability...

I can not express to you how little product I used. Maybe, and I mean maybe the size of pea and a small pea at that.

It just looks thicker in the pictures :)

Yeah. The funny thing is DG-271 says to apply "liberally".

I'll have to see if I can pick up a burette to actually measure how little I used.

1 WEEK UPDATE

Okay here we are one week later. The vehicle has in this time only sat outside, and no driving. The weather has graced us with rain, sun, and snow. The temps have been all over the place ranging from lows in the 20's to highs in the low 50's.

Following is a series of photos revealing the one week test results.

My opinion has both products finishing nicely with the upper hand going to the UTTG for a more even coverage and color. You can see the handle treated with DG-271 wasn't as successful as UTTG in returning the color back to an even flat black.

Now in case you didn't see it in the earlier pics, here's something that clearly makes one product stand above the other.

I'm convinced that the run-off under the handle treated with UTTG was simply rain wash. Much different story for the handle treated with DG-271.

The reason I make this claim is because I took some DG FCS and sprayed the area under each handle to clean. The UTTG area cleaned away with one wipe just as rain run-off would, BUT the area under the DG-271 took several applications to clean the area, just as most other trim dressing run-off requires.

I will keep the handles as is for one month and report back at that time, but obviously UTTG is off to a big lead.

Nice...I guess I am going to have to just take the plunge and get the UTTG and stop wasting money on the stuff I had been using. I suppose I'll be getting the UPGP too. I want to be able to say "And I never looked back".

You can't go wrong with UTTG.

I applied UTTG to several other areas of the vehicle during this initial test. Mirrors, handles, wiper arms, basically anywhere flat black trim existed. I did not get to the tires, but I will do those soon.

All areas were clean, flat black, and had no run-off.

man, I have got to add the Ultima product to my next order. thx

Nice update. Looking like UTTG is winning the trim wars again.

I wouldn't call it much of a war, UTTG proves every time that its the king ;)

Not to derail your testing because I appreciate it immensely, but I get the same results on the same areas using Ultima Paint Guard Plus. My thought is that if someone has UPPG, try it on those areas before buying yet another specialized product.

I do not have to deal with the snow and so forth that M does so that certainly will make some difference. For instance, it's New Year's Eve and it's 85º here today and the A/C is on. UPPG leaves a very nice non greasy luster to those black areas and it may be worth a try. It will renew horrid black plastic door handles, wipers, and other black plastic areas, (like in front of the windshield) in nothing flat.

Again, I do not wish to take away from the work M put into this but merely offering an alternative. I am able to do the paint and the plastic all in one shot and it lasts about two months on the plastic, in this climate. UTTG may be the superior product here but if you have the other give it a try. It works quite well for me.

I remain interested in this long term test. Thank you for going to the trouble for doing it, we will all benefit from it and please excuse my post. It is NOT a hijack, I'm just offering a possible alternate in the same product line that has done a smash up job for me.

Looks like you need to take a look at the myth thread that Corey made.
