i have a handfull of meguairs MF 6" pads from my porter cable setup that are sitting around. i was thinking about trimming them down to use them in my Rupes 15 backing plate. i know, this is the opposite idea af Kevin Brown's exact-fit backing plate. i was just wondering if the pads had any kind of binding to prevent fraying?

I think they are just laminated together, so IMO you should be able to cut them. Just a caveat, I think all of mine are the old (first generation) ones, so if yours are the newer ones (made in USA?) it's possible they are different (although I doubt there is any "binding" on the edge either way).

I guess the trick is to have a really sharp (x-acto) knife, and you've got to be fairly accurate (although I've seen the video of KB trimming a backing plate, and I gotta say that's not the way I figured he was doing it, LOL).

Maybe put it on the backing plate and just put it face down and cut around the backing plate.
