What's everyone's thoughts on the new two tone rims on most manufacturer's new cars and trucks? You know the rims that have the silver or grey faces and then any part of the rim that is recessed is painted black. I personally am not a big fan of this new look but it appears to be what all the manufacturer's are going with. Personally I like just a silver rim , and not this newer two tone style.

Are you talking about like 2pc 3pc rims that have different colored centers?

My solution for the black barrel.
I like the transparency of all one color. It's the first thing I remedied on my TSWs.
It doesn't match the hypersilver face perfect but in my eyes it is a much better look.

Those look really good. Was that a rattle can job?

Yes it was.
I first scuffed the black then used Duplicolor High Performance wheel coating, silver and clear.
It's held up for two years (no winters).

FWIW, I have wondered if part of the appeal of this trend is that it makes brake dust rather invisible on poorly maintained wheels (while still maintaining a "shiny" face). Which of course IMO is half the reason for fully black or gunmetal wheels.

The all-black/gunmetal style/color of wheels tend
to show all of the brake dust and other contaminates
that will accumulate on them—wheel "blemishes",
as it were.

Doesn't positively contribute to the
vehicles' overall aesthetics, IMO.

Nothing wrong with them

They're generally referred to as machined face wheels. The whole wheel is painted or powder coated the color of the pockets(gray, black, silver, whatever) then the wheel is put on a cnc lathe and a cutter traces the profile of the face as the wheel spins. It removes a small amount of aluminum and depending on the desired result the lathe can be programed to produce low reflective coarse machine lines(like whats found on your standard mid 2000's honda's and acura's), or lines cut so closely together and fine that the surface finish looks polished(like newer mercedes products). The more mirror reflective wheels are often referred to as "diamond cut". I'm not sure why this process has become so main stream. Really seems to have picked up a ton of steam with auto manufacturers in the last 5-6 years.

Depending on the rim I do like them. I would like the RS7 style wheel on my S5 that I found on ebay but were too far away and were local pickup only. I have a wheel like that on my wagon also which are actually for a half ton pickup but rims with 5x5 bolt pattern are limited.
