First off I have never detailed anything bigger than a pick up truck or SUV. I got offered an opportunity to detail two dump trucks. They are both being shipped as we speak, used out of auction. Condition unknown. Owner wants a price for chrome polished wheels, cab cleaned in and out, wash/wax, and I am sure a thorough degrease. First should I charge flat or hourly. How much?

Tri axle dumps.

Thanks guys!

I used to drive a 2006 Mack tri axle I would bring home this was before I really got heavy into detailing. I will say it's a lot of work, just polishing the wheels was a full time job. If it was me and these trucks need a lot work I would go hourly otherwise you might get burnt on a flat price.

Show him an example of the work quality that you do and charge hourly. Also I find my customers love it when I send them pictures as I'm working. They feel like they know that you're working hard.

Don't price them until you see them. Hourly most likely will be you best bet.

If they have nice polishes Alcoa aluminum wheels you should expect to spend an entire day on just the wheels. Another day on just the underside and the bed/bucket. Then maybe another two days on the shell and the interior. On each truck. It might cut down on the total time a little if they were parked sis by side so you could just duplicate your process on each area as you go along.

Thanks for the input guys. I was not going to charge them a flat rate because I knew that I probably would get burned because of the time it would take to do just one of the trucks may be close to two days. He wants all chrome polished the whole underside and engine cleaned. As well as the basic detailing stuff inside. I was thinking about charging him $50 per hour but I'm starting to think that might be too little. I'm definitely going hourly on this job and I'm going to try and complete both trucks on a weekend, I also need to hire one other person to help me.does $70 per hour sound too high or too low?
