Holy CRAP!
Ahhhh... the elusive 4 rotor. Not his... the ORIGINAl 4 rotor that Jim Downing ran for years in IMSA. I used to do some towing for Jim's parts shop, MazMart that literally sells used Mazda parts around the world, plus he was the original factory backed Mazda racer.
Jim's original race shop was there with the part business, and I'd pop in from time to time just to see what the were up to. I remember turning off Clairmont Road one day and hearing an engine just SCREAMING almost a mile away!!!!!
His dyno room had an exhaust leading to the parking lot, and inside he was testing a new design, a 700 HP four rotor that was a marvel of engineering.

That engine was more or less two peripheral ports on a single eccentric shaft. It was amazingly powerful and light, but so darned loud that IMSA required Jim to put a muffler on the race car. The muffler was probably 8" in diameter and ran from the back wheels all the way down the side and exited behind the front tire! Even more... it would spit fire out the front like it was a front engine car with short pipes!
Now days they'll make 800 HP and run darned near 10,000 RPM!
That was of course back in the early 90's. Since then there have been
plenty more. Tons of YouTube videos of them in cars, even at Downing Atlanta! :dblthumb2: There is even a video of one on the dyno a few years ago.
