I recently sold something on eBay. It was going from FL to IL. I printed a label directly from eBay via PayPal. I physically placed the package into the metal swinging door receptacle thingy at the Daytona Beach Post Office. Seems pretty simple, right?

Here's the tracking info that resulted from this:

According to this,

  1. The package left my post office
  2. It arrived at another post office 30 minutes north about 6 hours later
  3. It then traveled 1.5 hours south in the OPPOSITE direction to Orlando (WHY???)
  4. It then left Orlando to go BACK to the original post office in Daytona Beach the next morning (WTH?)
  5. It got placed on a truck for delivery (in the same town as I had sent it the prior day) (WTH!!!)
  6. The mailman teleported across 1,083 miles to Missouri, while time-traveling 12 minutes into the PAST. (WHOA!)
  7. Then, it was delivered the next day at the destination as scheduled. (WHEW!)

This happened to ALL 12 boxes I shipped out that morning, with different final destinations!

USPS may get your package there within 2 days as promised, but their tracking is totally whacked and rather humorous. It made me think yesterday that all my packages were being returned to me for some reason.

It used to be worse its slowly getting better though.

They could have saved all those steps and have the mailman teleport directly to the destination and be done with it... bureaucrats !

The USPS tracking system (if you want to call it that) always amazes me!

I sent a letter via next day USPS service from Fort Myers, FL to Fort Lauderdale, FL and it took 2-week days to arrive :dunno:

Ok I see where I went wrong... The arrival time in Missouri was PM not AM. I thought ... even with an hour time zone difference it made it in less than an hour.

While on the surface it doesn't make sense, the routes that parcels take in the USPS system are well calculated. It is one of the largest logistic systems on the planet and while it looks inefficient, it, in itself, is highly economical.

Consider this, try shipping a reasonable size package (something comparable to a USPS large flat rate box) coast to coast. UPS and FedEx will take 7 days. USPS will take 3 days and for less at that. Always remember they are processing millions of parcels daily and their system flat of works.

My last USPS package tracking said "notice left" like it was undeliverable. I checked the mailbox, no notice left. It still delivered later that same day
