Hello I have a 2001 Land Rover Discovery that is fairly "beefed up". I have been detailing for a while but never messed with a hood blackout because they are expensive and hard to replace if they are messed up... My truck has one of these pesky blackouts and I am now getting more and more LR off-road guys wanting their trucks done because my truck always looks great even after the trails (I keep a Nomad sprayer in the truck and hose off after the trail). A lot of them have the blackouts on the hood and when I am doing the details on them I want to provide them with the most complete job possible...

The blackout is made of usually 3M 7year satin black or matte black vinyl the mfg says that a good wash will clean them but honestly that is not so true... You wash them then they still look grimy and cheap after... When these things are new they look great but they tend to spot up after a few washes and months...

I have tried a vinyl dressing on mine after washing and it looks great for about a week but after that it goes back to the ugly look... (if I can get some pics I will post)

What would you recommend for this problem?

TIA

Is it that no one has run into this type of a issue? or that I need some pics of what I am talking about? I have added pics of my hood blackout so that it might help clear up any questions... (Please don't mind the mess of my truck right now as we have been having an odd winter season here in CO and she will be getting a very thorough detail in a few weeks when the weather is back to "normal")

This is the blackout I am speaking of...

Would something like a clay bar help remove any leftover contaminants? You'd have to be careful around the edges to prevent grabbing them and make sure to use plenty of lubricant.

Have you tried waxing the film? I have clear paint protection film on the front of my hood and use Ultima Paint Guard Plus as a base and top it with a Pinnacle wax (SSII).

Cleans as easy as the rest of the vehicle and hopefully protects it in the long run from everyday abuse.

Wish I had better advice for ya.

I have never tried claying it but I could try and see what the outcome would be. As far as waxing I have tried a qd but nothing more as the mfg says that you should not "wax" the product (or that is what the instructions said when I got the vinyl) the qd worked for about 2 weeks and faded... I will try claying it and maybe some 303 vinyl protectant see how that comes out... I will possibly be working on my truck this weekend and I will get some pics up here after I am done... Thanks for the help/suggestions... If you have more please let me know... Thanks

You may want to try some UTTG on it if a vinyl dressing looks good for a week or so. This will hold up better than any other dressing IME.

A friend of mine, Richy, used DG #501 Marine Polish on black vinyl stripes on a Mustang without altering the look of the vinyl. Not only does it clean grime, but it adds protection. I would post a link but that is a no no. Please feel free to send me a pm for more info.

^ I was thinking the same thing: any sealant or AIO -- which does not normally stain trim -- should work. As always, try a test spot first. I've read TW Ice is good on trim, but I have no first-hand experience. I have used DG101 on satin/flat nerf bars, and it worked excellent. Once cleaned, a spray wax (like AquaWax) can add protection.

Interesting thread, sorry I have no advice but i will be ordering some UTTG and UPGP this Friday so if I come across something like this I would like to know if they work on it.

I will see what happens this weekend as I am hoping that I can get her detailed. I have to do the wife's car first because she actually has some time and she lets the dang thing go (I love her but she can't seem to love her car like I can... lol...) I will let you guys know what works...

Try looking into Swissvax Opaque. People over the pond are going crazy over that wax for their matte/satin wrapped vehicles.

google and see what people are using on Daytona (version) Chargers. There's lots of flat black vinyl on them.
