Hey guys, lookin for some help. My sister in law just got her first car about a week ago. 2007 VW Beetle. I'm gonna be a nice "big brother" and give it a proper detail for her for free. It has a "unique" smell to it. After some research it appears that it is a common smell in the Beetles. Has anyone had any experience in this particular smell and what you did for it? Lookin for some help as to maybe the cause of the smell and what to do to fix it. Any help is greatly appreciated and don't ask me to describe it cause I have no idea what to compare it too. My wife and mother in law both say it smells sort of like burnt crayons? Never burnt them so idk what that smells like lol. Please help!

Here try this 1Z einszett Klima-Cleaner - A/C Odor + Bacteria Cleaner. I use this all the time for my customers.

Old German cars all have that smell .. Horse hair padding in the seat cushions .. That's my opinion .

Can't guarantee this will work...But:

-You'll need to pull the seats and all of the carpet and padding/sound-deadening mat.

-There is a possibility some cosmoline/rust-proofing, that was originally sprayed/brushed on the floorpans, for its trip from the factory to the dealership.

-Even if that's not entirely the problem...
A good seat-cleaning/carpet cleaning/pad replacement is in order.

-Make sure to check the underside of the vehicle for any signs of excess cosmoline or rustproofing that needs to be removed.

-Heat is the biggest instigator of this unique aroma...
Which...BTW...is not limited to VW Beetles!

Well unfortunately I cannot link it.

Buy the Griots Odour Exterminator

Then clean the headliner, the seats, EVERYTHING!

Then use this. It is a Chlorine bomb. Fill with water, put in the cup holders. Close the windows and doors, wait 6 hours. Before you take it out, turn the AC on recirc and max. Wait another hour, all good! It will smell like a swimming pool for a few days, but overall it should clear it all out. This is what I use on smokers.

Beetles just stink inside and I work for VW. Give it a good cleaning and if you know someone with an ozone machine have them run it inside.
