Is a sponge OK to use for car washing?

Is it a preference issue, or do sponges cause micro-scratches or something?

I've been seeing a lot of talk around here about mitts, which has caused me to wonder about sponges. I've used mitts in the past, but usually use sponges, especially if the vehicle doesn't have top notch paint, and hasn't been kept up properly with washing and waxing. I think sponges scrub the dirt out a little better, but now I'm wondering if some consider them too abrasive. Will you not use a sponge on a relatively good paint vehicle, or after a vehicle has had it's paint corrected?

Are you talking about sponges sold here on AG?

If so, it's pretty much a preference thing. I personally like MF mitts.

Also, when doing a rinseless wash, I'll use about a dozen MF towels. No mitts or sponges.

using both of these together works great, use the wash pad for the large flat panels and the mitt for everything else...

Wash mitt? Dragging dirt and debris across the surface of my paint like a barbarian? I've evolved to MF towels or a big red sponge when the car is really dirty, usually for lower panels.

Kidding. I used MF mitts as well when I'm not doing waterless or rinseless.

Wash mitts and multiple mitts per wash. If I do use a two bucket method I let the wash mitt soak in the soap solution for a few minutes before starting. The mitt is nice and slippery and it glides across the paint with little effort. Lately I have been using the foam gun with no wash bucket. I foam a panel at a time and then foam the mitt. I will usually use 4 or 5 wash mitts per car.

Foam gun works great on wheels too ^^

Multiples wash mitt for me

Before finding this site i used a sponge. Now that this forum has made me mental, I can't imagine using a sponge on my paint. I use several mitts per wash. I have not gone to the new mitt for every panel yet.

I started using an 1100 gsm 8x8 double flip microfiber towel and really like the results.
