A friend asked me a question the other day and I don't know the answer. The question is, can you wax/seal your car too much that it would be bad for the paint?

I really doubt wax would ever hurt the paint. Maybe if you had layer upon layer of wax it would start to get excessive and hazy ... but I don't think any damage would ever occur.

But really, if you're applying the wax carefully and using the correct tools and procedures and buffing the excess off properly then I doubt you'll ever have a problem.

Constantly rubbing an applicator and a towel over the paint could mar it over time, especially if they are not surgically clean.

If your surface is well prepped and you arent just waxing without prep work then no. Cars for shows use several layers of wax. Casvg5 had mentioned some detailers he knew applying so much for a show car finish that he had to wipe the surface with cold water to prevent from smudging the layers of wax.

Now, having to correct your paint too many times to apply a good coat of wax will wear away the clear and burn you down to the painted surface. That should be avoided. Get it corrected and then take good care of it.

^^^Reason #17 for using: "Surgical Hucks"?^^^ :D

@OP:
During a Wax's expected life-cycle, it will start "graying-out"...occluding the underlying paint films.
Nothing so drastic, I've ever seen, that a proper Wax-renewal process---using proper techniques---won't remedy.

If you do it right, the answer is "no, no real risk at all". If you do it from time to time overtime you might need to take care of the prep. If you mean about waxing too many times in a single row, the worst it can happen is that the extra wax removes the previous wax and you are just wasting time and product.

All your doing is adding coat after coat of wax with no benefit at all. Some waxes last a few days and others last 6 months or more. Use what you like and rule of thumb is every quarter for waxing and twice a year for sealants.

P.S some products will even last longer.

No doubt about it, waxing very often is much, much better than not waxing at all, or not waxing enough.
