From what I have read it seems that circular motions are a no no with washing, buffing, and waxing. Does everybody go sideways along the sides of the car? What about on the hood??? Does it vary at all depending on the process? With polish, wax, and sealants do you rub back and forth or only in one direction?

Thanks in advance!

When waxing and using sealants I do front to back on all horizontal surfaces and up and down on vertical sections.

I usually follow the wind across the car and panels ... sounds cool and I can actually remember it too ! (smiles)

As killr said, wax in the direction the wind is flowing as if the car is moving forward.

I don't know how much it actually matters as long as you wax in straight, overlapping lines. Personally, I just apply waxes in straight lines based on whatever is easiest and fastest for me. So the lines will be in any direction on any given panel.

I find circular motions allow for a more uniform application.

To answer you question, you can use either or. I will use circular motions on the large areas and back on forth motion in the tight areas.

If you're using a non-abrasive product than it shouldn't matter what direction you use to apply it.

unless sand or dirt blows up on surface or caught in applicator. A round swirl or scratch is much easier to see (catches light more often) than one small straight scratch. Thats why I often use straight application.

We both know you would be polishing out that scratch STAT! :buffing: :D

For your wax, are you applying a paste wax? If you are, then you'll probably find that using the P21s wax applicators will allow you to get an even coverage easily when applying wax in straight lines. I don't even feel the need to use circular motions when applying wax now because these are easiest to use in straight lines.

P21s Applicators

I know these were on BOGOF a couple of weeks ago but I don't think they are now.
