Waxing Chrome?

Greetings all... I was wondering if anyone uses wax (or any type of sealent/protectant) on chrome surfaces. On most cars/trucks the chrome grills aren't metal, it's chrome plated ABS plastic. However, some have chrome running boards. Is it ok to wax these chrome items? What is the preferred product to protect them with?

Sorry if this seems like a no-brainer, but everything talked about on here is usually about paint, not other surfaces.

Definitely! Protection is vital for all exterior surfaces whether it is metal, painted, or plastic.

Use a dedicated metal wax/sealant for best results. If you want a very long lasting protection, apply a permanent coating to the surfaces!

Autosol s Paste pretty good on my side , it s one I can get real easily near where I live . But I ll have to try Nevr-Dull one day .

Thanks guys.. I already have some Collinite 845 that I could use. I just looked at metal waxes and see that they make an 850 strictly for metal. I wonder if it is much different than the 845?

 NO DONT TOUCH NEVER DULL! ND looks good for about 8 hours! I can say this with a firm backround since I spent the first 4 of 20 yrs in the navy using it almost every other day. On the same things! It has a great shine but it wont last.

As a motorcycle owner, I have tried a list of stuff. Also use 0000 steel wool with your product if you have any tough areas.

#1 favorite S-100 Total Cycle Finish Restore
#2 3M- chrome polish
#3 Semi-Chrome

After this it runs down the usual list of OTC. I have not tried the polising balls or wheel kits. This is something I have perfered to do by hand even though it takes time. (Spokes are a Pain! but look soooo good when done)

It is funny you put this up today because I was also wondering what to use to seal over it after I have done all this work. I think S-100 has some protectant in it, but as for a dedicated product I dont know.

Take a glance at the motorcycle care section. There is a vid of Mike and the guy from S-100 using a chrome soap and following that with the Total Cycle Finish Restore. I ahve never tried the "soap" but the other stuff works magic!

An obvious thing to avoid would be hot surfaces - exhaust tips, for example, would be sufficiently hot to boil off most waxes.

having enough Plastic chrome on my truck , which has now been removed and grill has been plastidipped . going through a Wisconsin winter and the road salt - plastic chrome takes a beating here . I've had good success with collinite 850 metal wax - even on plastic . it says its non abrasive cleaner wax .

Go to your nearest HD shop and you will find S-100. You can also get it online if you google it.

How does s100 not scratch the hell out of chrome and polished aluminum? I don't wanna be the test dummy.

Ohhhh, those brass belt buckles, how I remember! One touch with a finger and all the work is, KAPUT.

I recently did some crome running boards with 850 and they came out really nice. Also used it on crome on a boat I did earlier in the summer and couldn't have been happier with the results.

NOt to be rude, but do you think that if someone spends 600+ on pipes, 300 on trick mirrors, 600 on a derby cover ect ect, that if S100 did not work that they would still be in business? Bikers are as picky as all the geeks here when It comes to their bikes. I just said I have used it for yrs also/ IT WORKS GREAT! I didnt make it I just know after 15 Yrs, and at least 10 different products,,its the SHIZNIZZEL!
hEY JUST TO PROVE IT ILL DO SOME BEFORE AND AFTER PICKS ON MY BIKE TODAY FOR EVERYONE. HOWS THAT? TUNE IN LATER TODAY.

Well that foam scrubber looks like the same material that they use for the pinnacle bug sponge, which is pretty rough. Take some pics under halogen lights before and after. If it doesn't scratch highly polished billet aluminum I'm sold.
