Weird question about washing and drying your vehicle.

Hello!

I have kind of a weird question about washing/drying/waxing your vehicle that I haven't been able to find anywhere. I've always noticed when I'm washing/drying/waxing my cars occasionally when I'm wiping I'll feel the paneling of the car feel almost like its flexing or pushing in.

As I wipe through its very subtle then it of course pops back. I was just curious if anyone else has this occur often. I don't feel that I'm rubbing too hard when I'm cleaning or anything but I notice it most when I'm cleaning the roof of my car and sometimes on the side paneling but it has happened in multiple areas over the years.

I'd just like to get other people's thoughts and also if I should be concerned with damaging my car or seeing any type of warping in the body. Again it's very subtle but I notice it when it happens. Thank you everyone for your input!

Sounds like your using WAY to much pressure! I wouldn't worry about warping the panels, I'd worry about scratching them when using that much pressure.

It should only take light pressure when washing and drying. If your warping/bending panels, your pressing too hard.
 
I will admit i have felt that in the past. And i say past as in pre-AGO days. I now use so little pressure when drying i never feel it anymore. The enemy of paint is "abrading" or friction passes...of anything.

I am guessing you will get a bunch of these kind of responses only because what you're asking about would seem to suggest too much pressure. I know what you are asking about...again because i have done it before...but don't be surprised when a bunch of us say "that's too much exerted pressure". :xyxthumbs:
 
There are no weird questions, just weird people. You should fit right in here.

Most automotive bodies are MUCH thinner metal or plastic than was used 30 years ago. Weight, safety standards, (think crumple zones), and raw material costs have caused manufacturing to cut way back on the amount used. Lighter cars are more fuel efficient.

That being said, warping the panel is a sure sign of too much pressure or leaning on a panel. Try to avoid that as much as possible.
 
Great question, IMO. I used to do it myself, and still see a lot of people doing it.
