I recently purchased a Porter Cable 7424 from autogeek. I consider myself at least somewhat mechanically inclined. I am having this problem with the polisher. It seems to be hitting the rivets on the polishing disk. Its overheating and I hardly have enough room to remove disk with supplied tool. I cant put any pressure on the toolat all with out it basicallly stopping( setting at any speed). I would think they result from the same cause. Am I missing something? is there a spacer or do I have a disk with a short shaft.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks and have agreat weekend.

Joe

can someone show a icture of the washer. i have read alot of people talking about it but i dont remember seeing one when i got my PC. so unless it is already installed i dont have my washer on either and have not had any problems

I recently got my PC 7424 as well.... same thing has been happening to me. There was a non-metallic washer included, but I thought it would be for the handle installation.

PC should have better instructions about the washer. Since it is so vital in the performance of the machine you would think they would put a big red tag on the washer.

That hard plastic washer is meant to be a spacer if needed. Like detailgod I never had to use it and no issues. Those that have had the same problem as you corrected it with the spacer.

I have 4 backing plates for DA polishers and only one doesn't work with the PC, the 5" Edge BP. There are 4 screws that stick out of the top of the BP making it impossible to tighten it onto the PC. The other three don't have anything on the top of the BP, so they work just fine. The Edge BP came with my UDM and works fine with that but a no go for the PC due to the smaller shroud. And FWIW, the PC manual I have which is copyright 2001 doesn't say anything about a washer but a parts diagram I printed out made 5/17/02 lists a spacer Porter Cable part number 850218.

washer is the common issue as noted, and described in the directions. Never had any problems with several backing plates (yellow flexibles) and adapter from Edge.

So I got my PC today. First thing I looked for was this washer. Found it. Put it in place and went to install the yellow flexible backing plate that was included in my wolfgang kit. Guess what - it had a little washer on it too. Do I use both washers or just the one that was in the bag with the PC instruction manual?

Try just one washer, if you have no rubbing issues; your fine.

Can anyone measure the thickness of this washer (Porter Cable part# 850218) that came w/ their 7424XP. I have the 97466 that doesn't come with the washer. I plan to get a similar washer/spacer from Home Depot instead (Portercable wants $12 shipping for a $3 MSRP item) This is the Home Depot washer that I think will fit: Black 5/16 in. x .032 in. Fiber Washers (2 Pieces)-13268 at The Home Depot

My PC 97466 with the 6" Standard Porter Cable Hook&Loop backing plate# 18001 shown here: Amazon.com: Porter-Cable 18001 6-Inch 6-Hole Hook and Loop Standard Pad for 7336 and 97366 Random Orbit Sander: Home Improvement Will the Lake Country Pads fit? Or do I need to buy a separate Backing Plate (the yellow Contour/Flexable ones by Lake Country)

Also, the PC 97466 comes with 6" counter weight. Do I need to change this to a 5" counter weight (since I believe it is what comes w/ the 7424 and 7424XP) If I don't need to change the hook&loop backing plate, I probably will stick to 6.5" pads. If I do need to use a different backing plate other than the one that came with my PC. I probably will use something smaller... 4-5" If that's the case, please advise what counter weight I need. TIA

According to my micrometer the thickness is .061 in. and the diameter is .935 in.

Hope that helps.

Make a washer out of a coffee can lid...make two for added thickness...make several in case you lose some...and save your money.

Post above gives you the dimensions, if you think they're that critical. The center hole clearance should be just enough to fit over the threads. It's a washer, so don't make it harder than need be.

You don't need to change the counter weight no matter what backing plate you use. I would go with 5.5" pads with the PC..you will get better correction with the smaller pads. The PC does not have enough power to spin a 6-61/2" pad. If the pad is not spinning it's not correcting.

You have no idea how happy I am that I saw and opened this thread. After reading about the washer I went back to my room and scoured through my trash to find the plastic bag that held the owners manual, and behold in the far corner is the aforementioned washer. So relieved that I didn't take out the trash yet today haha. Im the MAN

Yes. Thank you! I guess that homedepot washer will fit near perfectly (with 2 stacked together!) .064 in will be close enough.

The reason why I choose the fiber washer/spacer is because that's what the original is (I checked with Porter Cable and they actually describe it as a fiber washer) ... it is made out of fiber, and from Home Depot decription of their item, it said it is "Commonly used in automotive applications with bolts" which I believe should stand up to some abuse (and possibly heat) I think paying $0.66 + tax is a bit better than DIY in this case and I have several HD nearby. :) but thank you for suggesting that.

Do you think it is a good idea to get both 3.5" backing plate w/ 4" Lake Country FLAT Pads (for leveling and correcting touchup paint my new vehicle - got a big rock chip to repair - and tight spots) and a 6" backing plate w/ 6.5" Lake Country FLAT Pads for doing the rest of the car? to speed things up

4" pads for tight spots would be good. You can also use them for windshields and headlights. If you want to speed things up, get rid of the 6.5" pads and get 5.5" pads.

:iagree::iagree: The PC will correct MUCH better with 5.5" pads!

I misplaced mine, (lost) many years ago and haven't been using one since without issue. My only guess would be the distance between the threaded insert and the main housing varies so using it was their solution....
