What color of green on the Camaro?

Received the below in a PM and I really prefer to answer questions on the public forum, not in PM's.

Hi Mike,

Would you know the Color used on that Green 1970 1/2 Camaro you guy's polished & detailed on youtube?

Thanks for any help.

Tommy says it's a custom color. He said he had it custom blended. It's a spin-off of the original GM citrus green.

Tommy is willing to send you a dab of paint to work from? (Thanks Tommy).

I've also sent him the link to this thread.

For everyone wondering what we're talking about, here's Tommy's Camaro and the GREEN color being talked about.

Here's what the car looked like when it arrived....

When the Camaro arrived I took this picture and most people just by looking at the picture or even the car from a few feet away would die to have a custom paint job this nice....

But the Brinkmann Swirl Finder Light reveals the true condition of the paint and that is a surface filled with,

  • Swirls
  • Scratches
  • Pig Tails
  • RIDS
  • Tracers
  • Micro-marring also called DA Haze
You can find a definition for all of the above in either my e-book or in this article here,

Tracers Tracers - RIDS - Pigtails - Cobweb Swirls - Rotary Buffer Swirls - Holograms - Water Spots - Bird Drooping Etchings - Micro-Marring

Check it out...

Pig Tails
If you look closely you can see a scratch that looks like the letter e in cursive writing running horizontally across the paint, this is called a Pig Tail and it generally comes from an abrasive particle that gets trapped between the paint and a sanding disc when machine sanding. The entire finish had Pig Tails plus Tracers randomly dispersed...

Micro-marring also called Tick Marks or DA Haze
The millions of tiny, small scratches highlighted by the Brinkmann Swirl Finder Light are caused by improperly worked abrasives when using a DA Polisher like the Porter Cable 7424XP, Meguiar's G110v2, Griot's Garage 6" ROP or Shurhold DA Polisher. These types of scratches are through out the entire car but you can really only see them on the black stripes not the metallic green paint. The point is that even though your eyes can't see them on the lighter colors they still cloud and dull the finish and keep you from seeing the beautiful color and/or metallic finish under the clear. These have to go!

RIDS - Random, Isolated Deeper Scratches
These types of scratches come from normal wear and tear and don't have any pattern to them thus the use of the word random in the description.

More information on RIDS here...
RIDS - The Definition of RIDS and the story behind the term...

Swirls and Scratches
What I see here is a combination of RIDS, swirls, DA Haze and Arc Scratches probably caused by wiping but they are also caused by improper use of a rotary buffer.

And just for the record, the nickname for the Brinkmann Swirl Finder Light is the Cruel Master because it's hard to please...

There were two write-ups for this car, the original and a follow-up...

Hey, thanks for the info,
It looked stunning on the youtube vid after polishing.

I doubt he will be willing to send a sample to the UK though unfortunately.

Would be awesome if he would do though!

Ps. I am new to forums & really have no idea where to post stuff!

Yeah I don't know much about sending things outside the U.S. but since it's just paint on some paper seems like it could be done through normal mail.

No problemo....

We we're ALL new to forums at one time, even computers and cell phones for that matter.

With the volume of e-mail and PM's I get it's just my normal practice to take it to the forum. I completely understand not everyone that sends me an e-mail or a PM or a Facebook message knows it's hard to type for one set of eyeballs. So no harm, no foul.

I've been taking things out of PM's, e-mails and FB messages and re-sharing on the public forum because I know in most cases, (maybe not this case), that whatever questions someone is asking me others have the same question.

IF I answer in an e-mail, PM or via message on FB only one set of eyeballs sees the information and sometimes I type out very detailed replies with tons of how-to info, links to more how-to info, pictures and videos. So by taking it to the public forum I leverage my typing time and help more people.

That's called win/win/win

Send me your mailing address I'll see what I can do.

And welcome to AGO!

:welcome:

Tommy's Camaro looks quite a bit richer than OEM. Here's one from google as a reference:

I have a buddy who has a '70 Z28 in the same green color that he bought in 1971 and has been stored indoors since 1984. I've been bugging him to let me do a paint restoration on it with the famous M07 method. You'll definitely see some pics of the process once it happens.

Yes it does look a lot richer than the stock colour.
Be nice to see your pics!!!
