Hi all,

I just got my license few days ago and took my friends for a ride excited of course, so was going about 50km/h and just stepped hard on the gas pedal and made the car jerk forward a little bit with pretty loud rev sound(?) from the engine. I kind a felt I over-did my engine after I pulled off this Will my car break down faster than normal? What about stepping on the brakes hard? I didn't brake in all the way, but I stepped on it pretty hard couple times, So what effect will this have on the car?

Thanks a lot.
George

George you realize this is a detailing site right?

Put your question in extremes... like this,

  • Will driving my car in a manner that's easy on the drivetrain help the drivetrain to last longer?
  • Will driving my car in a manner that's hard on the drivetrain help the drivetrain to last longer?

:D

So, how do I drive stick - btw? Oh wait...wrong forum!

LOL

Kidding guys. Hey, even though it's a detailing forum, it is kinda interesting how AGO is seen as a general automotive discussion arena by some.

:welcome: To Autogeek Online George! :props:

It sounded like when you punched it, the transmission shifted down a gear and brought the engine RPM's up. This is normal with an automatic transmission vehicle especially when passing or when you need to pick up speed in a hurry..

Braking hard will result in premature pad and tire wear. Basically anything other than normal driving will wear components. Keep in mind that cars are designed to do this as the unexpected does arise during normal driving...

I can't see where you'd hurt anything....

I thought it was going to be something like the extra speed would or wouldn't wear off the LSP faster and the braking making the wheels dirtier, who knew?

Also, welcome to AG!

I love this forum! Welcome Mr. George Brown!

... did I mention I love this forum?!?!

I would like to think my cars accelerate so fast that any LSP can't hold on.

Read thru your owners manual. It should have a break in procedure. Most recommend not to exceed a specified RPM for a specified number of miles.

Be careful!!! If it doesn't feel right, don't do it!!! Your still learning and don't need to make a mistake you will regret.

Welcome to AGO hand...I think that I saw you driving on the Beltway today!!!:laughing::laughing:

For one thing punching your accelerater and then coming to a fast stop will absolutely kill your gas milege. Also it will put extra wear and tear on your car. Believe it or not even when driving an automatic trans. and keeping your foot on the brake while your car is in gear at a stop will put extra stress on it. Some people think driving habits don't matter that much but I know from plenty of experience that the way you drive has alot to do with the life of your car. There is a time and place for everything.

Drive it like you stole it !!! Seriously, welcome, enjoy your new ride.

welcome to AGO, i know one thing whenever i have kids and they get old enough to drive they wont be driving unless they know how to do emergency repairs without calling anyone for help....cars are like women, they last long if you treat em good. why do you think old people's cars always drive so well and last a while after change of owner its because old people drive so slow and accelerate so slow it don't strain the car. some cars are built for having some fun, some are not. by old people i mean the senile types who do 35 in a 55 while driving in the passing lane while on a cellphone.

True to a point...until you get one of those cars and start to drive it normally, then things start to fall apart....sometime.

imo they wont start to fall apart UNLESS it was stored for a while. i wish people would realize if you are going to store a car atleast drive it around the block a few times get it up to operating temp and then store it back and do this every few months..had this issue with my '96 grand prix GTP i had, was beautiful paint was amazing cayanne red metallic with 100k when it got bought, however it was in a garage for 4 years after it hit 120k is when i started to have real issues and i believe it is due to rubber dry rotting and leading to massive vacuum line leaks. it was so bad my throttle got stuck at about 3k rpm lost break power and SLOOOOWWWLY ran into the back of an undercover taurus! dude got out like i slammed into him at 30mph, it was honestly 2 mph and did not even leave a scratch...thats when it got sold...in all honesty though if i found another one in good body condition as the one i had i would get it in an instant. was never driven in rain or snow heck the undercarriage manufacturers stickers were still white and yellow!. man i do miss the compliments i would get... heres a picture of same style i had
