So I realize I can't make an 11 year old wheel look like it's brand new. But no doubt the thing I love about detailing is the challenge of at least trying to make it new!

I researched and decided on Royal Brown, Iron X, pressure washer and a brush.. It got it pretty clean but I want ALL the grime gone.

Any other advice?

I agree with Flash steel wool and APC. I have used steel wool and mothers metal polish and that worked really well cleaning nasty wheels.

Sorry but I am ignorant to using steel wool. Does xxxx mean something, like a grit? Or do you just mean any brand?

Thanks

I was in the same boat with my car, and ended up in the same spot you are at. Well, my barrels are cleaner. But those cast pockets behind the spokes? Forgetaboutit. I spent a looong time working on them and gave up. If it really bothered me, I'd go out and buy some refurbished OEM wheels. But it's like the undercarriage of my car; out of sight, out of mind.

I also agree with Flash. If you're not comfortable with that, try Iron X Gel and let it sit. You won't get the same results but should see a bit more improvement.

Thanks, I will give it a shot!

Like I said, it's really just about the challenge at this point. Man vs. Wheel. 😜

The wheels looks great though you could try like already stated steel wool or iron-x you could also if you wanted try acid but use that only if everything else fails

if it were me and I wanted to do my best, I'd put them face down, protected of course, and put MB WB in the pockets and let it dwell. Then spray the barrel with WB and clean them. You could really let that acid sit in those pockets. If you don't have WB, Megs Hot Rims chrome wheel cleaner.

Steel wool was great advice, thank you. Learning every day!

I'm going to call it a win from here. Those dirty pockets I can't get and I don't have acid. Besides, like I said they are 11 years old with no maintenance whatsoever.

I like the poster who said out of sight out of mind. Valid! The flat part of the rims I can see walking by so I wanted to do the best I could there, but those pockets, well let's just say they don't even exist when they are on the car. :-p

On to the next task...

What type of steel wool did you use?

you can try damp sanding them also with either 800 or 1000 grit sand paper

He used 0000, I've had great luck with soaking down the 0000 steel wool with liguid metal polish or even a cleaner/polish or a aggressive compound before. But always test on an unseen area or out of sight and start out with very light pressure and keep checking work area.

Just yesterday had to use a small piece of 0000 steel wool soaked with a cleaner/polish to remove black top sealer splatter? on the bottom of the rocker panels just behind the tire half way down the side of the car. Came off but used light pressure and small circular motions and kept the 0000 steel wool wet with product.

Dremel or a drill with a stainless steel brush attachement will clean all of that off.
