I hear people talk a lot about brushes in your DA or buffer and I would like someone to explain what they are, how they work, and if they need to be replaced or what? thanks

Carbon brushes are on each side under the plastic housing held in by plastic caps with a slot for removal. Yes they need to be replaced depending how much the machine is being used. They make contact with the armature to make it spin.

Not the exact ones but an idea of what they look like Porter Cable Tool Part N030459 sub for 904732 Porter Cable Brush & Spring - Mike's Tools

and posting that link took more time than just answering my original question. note to fellow members: this is one of "those people" who troll around and search for questions that sound so elementary when compared to their endless knowledge of all things, just so that they can make have a short moment of chest-pounding glory so as to remove themselves from the miserable life they live. the world is full of people like this. and internet forums big and small have been tainted by their wisdom since the almighty internet was born. Hail to the King :urtheman:

yes, the first answer was perfect but to be a smart a$$ and send a link to wikipedia is not helping. as the old adage says, if you dont have anything good to say.......keep your mouth shut and stop trolling.

Maybe you can find an answer on the carbrite forums...

wow........how quickly I realize what this website and forum really is....the same as nearly all other forums.......everybody knows it all, and if you ask a question that other people already know, you get treated like an idiot right off the bat. nothing new here online. everybody is an internet tough guy. and car brite makes great product dude. my lot has made over $200,000 a year for the past 10+ years using almost exclusively car brite products. i bet you cant say that. no, I'm sure you cant say that.

So am I suppose to be impressed?? Hundreds of people come here everyday with no problems, you show up and there's problems...maybe it's not the other forum members, ever think of that? You obviously are on here trying to push carbrite products. A little advice as well, when you ask a question here don't ridicule the answers you get. There was nothing smart a$% about any of the replies given to you, now get over yourself and move on.

The term "brushes" is a bit of a misnomer as you think of a brush in it's normal sense. In any electrical motor, alternator, generator etc. you have to have a way to get the current from the cord to the stator. If you do a google search on motor brushes you'll get a good idea.
motor brushes - Google Search

They are nothing more than a conductor that rubs on the turning part of the motor. They wear down with use and need replacing down the road when no material is left for the current to pass through.
Typical swap time is under 5 minutes.

couldnt care less if car brite goes out of business tomorrow. lately, i have been trying more and more products from different companies. actually, i like a lot of them better. but where i live, which is the city where car brite was originally created 50+ years ago, its really the only thing any lots/shops/auto body shops use. i mean every single one of them. i grew up with the family who invented it and before i knew how to even wash a car I would see car brite stuff laying all around in my friends garage. still best friends with the local distributors son and I get about 25% off their already low prices. so why wouldnt I use them? for the longest time, its all I knew how to use. that is precisely why I joined this site, so that I could get ideas about new products and I spent over $500 last night and plan to make another big purchase today to get the black friday deal (15% off). I just hate smart a$$es that you find so often on forums like this. you ask a simple question, get a simple answer and thats it . but then sure enough somebody else has to chime in and talk to me like a child. I went to college for Information Technology so I'm pretty sure I know what wikipedia is. hate on me, hate on car brite, hate on whatever you want. Ive built a very successful business and it continues to grow every year. that I know for sure. i just wish people would show others some respect. dont hate, congradulate. thats what this site is for. some day you will ask a question that I might be able to answer I will speak to you with the respect we all deserve. its what makes this site such a great thing. much love--

but the link he gave me was for the wikipedia home page. not a wikipedia page pertaining to "brushes". in other words, he was saying "dont ask stupid questions, just go search wikipedia first". and he didnt need to do that anyway cause the first reply had already answered my question. he was just looking for a cheap shot. bored I guess. anyway, got the simple answer I was looking for. next time I wont bother asking, lol.

Oh maybe he just isn't as skilled with computers as you are. You haven't even given members a chance to share their knowledge with you. The amount of knowledge on this site is amazing if you allow it to be fed to you.

i agree with that. this site is very cool. hope to get some help from time to time and certainly willing to help others. there are no stupid questions in my book.

haha..nice one baknforth101.

i did copy the link with the electric motor and brushes info..i dont know what happened if the link took you to the homepage.

anyhow, take care db.

I grew up using Turtle Wax as probably most on this forum have, wouldn't use it today if given to me for free, there are too many better products available. They have marketing and advertising dollars to keep it popular. Everyone is willing to help and offer their opinions and expert use of a lot of products.

Glad you expanded your lineup of different items, hopefully you'll get better results. There's always someone willing to help if you have difficulties with something.
Good luck.

baknforth101, did you even click on his link? It says wikipedia but is a link to the proper brush wikipedia page.

For example, this next link says the same thing primo's did, but click it and you might get a surprise.

Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Good luck with your future endeavors.

I live my life assuming the best in people. If someone does something questionable I assume they did it with good intentions until I know for a fact otherwise. It seems easier that way. I am not sayin, I am just sayin.
