What exactly is Enviroguard?

So my parents are looking to buy a Subaru and the dealership is really pushing this enviroguard protection plan which does look rather good, BUT they don't know what in the hell it is. I ask if it is like Optiseal and they have no idea. It goes on the seats, it goes on the trim, it goes on the paint, it goes on the carpet and it has a 7 year warranty (rips and tears on leather are covered too). Even the official website of enviroguard (Product Overview - Cal-tex Protective Coatings) doesn't state exactly what it is.

Anyone have any idea what this is and if this essentially replaces was/sealant?

My idea is that it's a way for the dealer to make more money on you and to instill swirls into your new ride, but that's me..

Apparently there are a few dealer coatings that are worth something, but most aren't. However, in this instance it sounds unlikely you will be talking your parents out of this.

don't do it. my mom had it done on her honda and when she told me I was pissed. didn't hold up well at all either.

My girlfriend bought an almost new subaru (from the dealer) with it applied and I got it home to wash it and it seemed to have no protection on it whatsoever...not worth it at all.

This reminds me of of the scene in FARGO about the sealant coat that the sales guy was trying to push.

Yep...money maker for the dealership. I was reading a couple of the many complaints. One guy paid 2K for it. I definitely wouldn't pay for it after reading those reviews.

Ah, the finance officer's "process"...
.
• After making the deal with the salesman, the FUN begins:
-The getting passed-off to the finance manager who'll spend at least a solid 15 minutes telling customers why they need the extended warranty, paint protection, tire warranty, GAP insurance, window VIN-etching, etc.

• I always let them go through their entire spiel without interruptions.
-When they're finally finished and ask me which options I wanted, I simply tell them:
None...but thanks for your time and efforts.

•Usually they'll repeat the "which options question"...
-Prompting another "that's a negative" response from me.

• Some finance managers have thrown such hissy-fits; acted so very unprofessional; and treated me like crap for the remainder of the time I sat in their office.

Regardless...
•Just keep in mind:
-The more crap they can sell to a vulnerable customer, the fatter theirs and their Dealership's wallets get.

-Needless to say, please do not allow your parents to fall for these purely-for-profit scams.

I am usually lucky enough to bother the salesman himself before even getting to the finance guy so the salesman tells him to not bother ;) . It's pretty simple actually refuse to tell him if you are trading anything, financing with them, or anything else.

Just come in prepared I get preapproved for a loan from my bank and get the true car price online before even talking to anyone. Then I demand an out the door price for the car. Then they can see if they can match my financing rate (which they can't).

Thanks for the feedback. I didn't think it was worth getting but wasn't sure, glad to be able to confirm it. And my parents were more curious if it was worth it than they were determined to get it.

From the reviews posted and what some of you have said it seems to be a gimmick. And here I was thinking it was comparable to Opti-coat lol. I would definitely be worried they would put swirls in the paint as well. Since I am probably the only going to be washing the car (I am now the designated detailer in the family) I will probably just stick with sealant.

Thanks for the help guys. :xyxthumbs:
