What makes old leather glossy?

I am working on a 15 year old car with coated leather seats. Parts of them are shiny. No cracks in them but some creases.
I have seen this before on some cars but the seats were already cracked. Can this be slowed down or are they too far gone?
I have never had much experience with leather.

Try gliptone for coated leather. Leatherqinue is best for vat dyed leather because the product can penetrated the surface.
 
After 15 years of use, sliding in and out of the car etc., the leather is essentially being 'polished' by abrasion.

Cure? Ain't gotta clue. But taking care of the seats will enhance their life and 'natural' beauty. Good grief, that reads like an infomercial...LOL

The gloss is usually built up oil and dirt. Hit it with a leather cleaner or appropriately diluted APC and see how it looks

Yeah, after Leatherique products my 19 year old BMW leather has a nice natural finish & feel to it that I didn't get with other (admittedly cheaper) products...

:iagree: "Butt Polishing"!!

I use Leather Masters Protection Cream to prevent this from happening.
 
Sheen is generally caused by dirt and incorrect product use together with the polishing action of sitting and sliding about on the leather.
Deep cleaning should get rid if this and then you can use protectors to help prevent it happening again.
