I know there aren't a ton of options. Seems like 3M rules the roost for the most part.

I sell packaging materials for a living, I get free tape samples all the time, 3M is just one of the brands out there. There's Shuford and Intertape too that both make high quality automotive paint masking tapes.

I use 3M yellow automotive refinish masking take for the most part as it is more tenacious than the 233+ green stuff and leaves zero residue -- body shop safe and all. I'm keen to try Precision, but at $8++ a roll it certainly gives me a lot of pause.

Shuford makes "Frog Tape"

Does Tesa make an automotive masking tape?

Yes, but I'm not sure on the retail side what it would be called, I sell to manufacturers wholesale not to retail. I'd sell tape to a company like AG as we are the master distributors of 3M, Shuford, Tesa, Intertape etc.

Intertape/IPG would most likely be under the "Pro Mask" Label.

The biggest thing is to buy the tape appropriate for the job. There's no sense in paying $$$ for a high grade automotive painters tape that is designed for high temp paint booths when all your looking for is a tape that doesn't leave a residue behind. You'll pay much more for a high temp automotive paint tape. In our detailing applications what you want to consider is easy release, no residue and how long are you going to leave the tape on the vehicle before removing it.

Yeah, I pay about three bucks a roll for the yellow 3M at the local auto body supply shop, which is cheaper than the green 233+ (that they don't carry) at other local stores. The bonus is the yellow tape doesn't slide around when it gets wet during damp sanding sessions, unlike either Frog or 233+.

This is one of the tapes I use and it's considerably less than 3M

Intertape PG505-121R 1 inch X 60 Yards Professional Grade Masking Tape

DESCRIPTION
A paint contractor industry staple. Beige,
smooth crepe paper masking tape coated with
a pressure-sensitive natural rubber adhesive.
Offers an excellent balance of quick stick,
panel adhesion and holding properties. Not
recommended for outdoor exposure.

Color basically means absolutely nothing as far as green, blue etc. other than an identifying deal pretty much for retail. None of the tapes I sell are colored they are all crepe masking tapes all the way up to the very high end high temp, high uv resistant ones.

The 3M Precision Masking Tape showed up at me local Pep Boys this week

Same price as 233+

Because it doesn't have the crepe backing, the roll looks like it doesn't have much tape on it. Did a double take

For tape that leaves no residue, search for Mike Phillips article on burning tape.

Same price, Kyle? I'll keep my eyes open. I pay about $3 a roll for the yellow 06552 tape and I like it. But if I can find 06529 for anywhere near the 233 price I'd like to try it.

My Pep Boys doesn't carry the yellow

233+ and Precision were the same price today

I think $5.99

Yeah, that's a price I'm ready to pay. I can get 233+ locally for around $6 a roll, or online for $4. Best I've seen for 06529 (the 3/4" Precision) is close to $9 each. Uh, no thanks.

6529 is over kill for detailing, that ipg tape I posted is a comparable tale to the 233 at a much better cost. We sell a lot of that compared to the 3m products.

I looked for it and could only find the 505 for around $4 a roll if I got a case of 12 or more. If I got that many I'd have to get out the FoodSaver and vacuum seal a few rolls to keep them "fresh" for a year. I just don't detail enough cars to buy by the case!

CarPro just released their own line of masking tape. I will be getting some with my next non AG order.

It may say Carpro but I'd bet $100.00 it's not made by them, just branded for them. Their are only a few manufacturer's of quality masking tape in the USA, I can count them on one hand.

From their website:
CarPro masking tape is manufactured in an ISO 9002 registered plant to meet worldwide quality standards.
