And how in the world does the manufacturer get away with it?

I read on this forum somewhere that there are certain new autos that are still only getting a single stage paint?!? Surely this info is incorrect?

I think its mostly Toyota and some of their non-metallic colors that are still single stage.

We just sold a 2009 White Tundra and it had clear coat on it...?
(I think?)

I haven't seen any newer cars with single stage paint ever. Would like to know if any makers are even using that process anymore.

I think that has recently changed, I some seem to have clears on them now. Not sure which models though
It could have changed for all I know. I just remember seeing some stuff on google with emails from Toyota saying only cars with pearls or metallics have clear coat.

honda had a color for the Civic SI, Taffeta white, which is a single-stage paint.

Not just reserved for the Civic, the 7th gen Accord also came in Taffeta. Not sure about newer models.

I know Honda's Milano Red and Taffeta White are single stage.

But what do you mean by get away with it?

Is it an incorrect assumption that every other manufacturer has went to a basecoat/clearcoat system?

You are correct...it's only the pure whites that are single stage paint.

I know back in late 80-90s they use to do single stage on fleet sales don't know if they stool practice this.

White is Single Stage w/no clear coat-per toyota

TSB from 2007 regarding toyota paint. From what i've seen, Ive seen lots of dulled out newer toyotas. I have a regular who comes in with an '11 or '12 Sienna that has oxidation spots all over. She even had a sealant applied from the dealer. Looks weird. She just doesnt have time to take it in she says. I'd be pissed.

Ah, thank you for this link.. Odd that it didn't show up in my google searches? Must be keyword differences or something.. I promise I did a search!! :fail:

I detailed a Toyota Carolla, white, that was single stage.

Took me a second to figure it out too!

No problem.

Apparently, anything with no metallic flake in it from Toyota is Single stage. If it has metallic flake it's cleared.

Lots of Toyota owners are mad!

My fiances 11' Toyota Camry in Blue Ribbon Metallic has a clear coat on it a rather hard one IMO.
