I have a white 93 Acura Legend that I'd like to detail with my new Griots Garage 6" orbital. The car is obviously old and has swirls and water stains over the whole body. Probly going to order a new backplate and go with 5.5" pads, but I don't know what colors to get even after hours of research! I'm going to be using Meguiars Ultimate Compound, followed by Ultimate Polish, and then I will use Ultimate Wax applied by hand instead of the DA.

Will buy 2-3 each for both steps

What color would you recommend for the Megs UC?
What color would you recommend for the Megs UP?

Thanks!

I like the Lake Country CCS pads. I usally start out with a white pad for the compound and if I dont get the results I want I go to a orange pad. Im pretty conservitive as I dont want to remove to much clear. You want to use the least aggressive pad to get the results you want.

For the glaze I use a blue CCS pad. Try to use in the shade of in a garage. I have never used Megs pads.

I'd give Lake Country pads a try; they are the largest manufacturer of buffing and polishing pads and they know a thing or two. :dblthumb2:

If you want to keep it simple, use an ORANGE pad (light cutting) for Ultimate Compound and a WHITE pad (polishing) for the Ultimate Polish. A Blue pad (finishing) will be a perfect match for the Ultimate Wax (paste or liquid).

If you're set on 5.5" B&S then I'd go:
Orange = UC
Green = UP
Black = Wax if you decided to use the machine

i pretty much agree with these replies. Lake Country orange pads with UC, white pads for the Ult. Polish, then if you didnt want to hand wax, you could go with any of the "finessing" or "jeweling" pads like the black or red for a machine wax. should get great results.

Prolly will go with that. Just a little scared that the orange will be too agressive

Orange is nothing to be afraid of at all. Depending on the amount and severity of your defects and the end result you wish to achieve, you might be kicking yourself in the arse for not having something aggressive enough.

Try a less aggressive approach first, but don't be afraid to go up to an orange pad (or even MF). Just use common sense and you'll be fine. :xyxthumbs:

Yellow is an incredible pad. It's closed cell as is the white. I'd get both of those and a black. I use yellow on almost every car: it's that good!

No reason to be scared... modern clear coat paints are pretty hard AND after you make a few section passes with any pad the pad becomes more wet with product and thus more pliable and less aggressive.

The LC pads talked about here are open cell and work great. After you get some experience and decide to get deeper into detailing then we also carry closed cell foam pads in the Hydro-Tech Line.

Both types of pads actually work really well. The open cell style will last longer because closed cell have a lower tensile strength.

Here's a few links to make it easy to get more information...

Like Nick said, if you want to keep it simple, (which works just as well as making it complicated), just get orange, white and blue.

For a lot of the projects we do here I also keep it real simple and we use either 5.5" flat or hydro-tech pads, check out some of the amazing before and after results here,
