I recently completed a detail on my wife's 2004 Honda accord. It was in good shape but because it was regularly washed at the cheap car wash it was full of fine scratches. I buffed it out and it now looks great but I am wondering how I can take the shine to the next level. Here is what I did:

  • Wash
    • Foam Gun
    • One bucket metod
    • Micro fiber mitt
    • Daytona wheel brush
    • Products - Meguiars Hyperwash, Wheels bright and APC+
  • Polish
    • Flex 3401
    • GG PC
    • Cheap Rotary
    • 5" Surbuf Pads (spot buff)
    • 6.5" Orange LC CCS
    • Wool Pad (bumper)
    • Products - WG Total Swirl Remover, Finishing Glaze and EG Sealant
As a rule it was one section pass per panel on speed 5 with the flex. The bumper was really scratched up and took 4 passes as well as a couple of areas that had some overspray.

What's the secret to a higher level of shine? More section passes or different products?

In my experience more passes can equal just enough to make it perfect and then a second later it needs to be re-painted because of burn through. I recently read an article where Mike Phillips mentioned a posters signature that he had liked. The signature was something along the lines of ," detailing is an art as well as a science."

Basically, shine comes from reflected light. The flatter your surface is, the better the light will reflect off of the surface and in turn the better the surface will "shine."
In order to achieve a surface that is as flat as possible you will need to compound down the surface as much as possible, this will remove surface imperfections. After the surface imperfections have been removed you will need to apply multiple passes with a non abrasive polishing product like Menzerna Super Finish (btw this is where the art of experience comes in to play). Once you have flattened out the surface, you can wipe the exterior with IPA and this will remove any left over polish residue also exposing the polished exterior as it is. As long as you are happy with what the car looks like after you have polished it you may add a protection such as Glaze, Wax, Sealant, or a Paint Coating. For the Best shine I always recommend using a combo of sealant first and a Super high gloss Glaze. With this you will definitely see the highest shine possible.

I hope this helps, and good luck with your next job!

Thanks.

I think I may pick up some Menzerna Super Finish and see what I can do.

What do you recommend as a "Super high gloss Glaze"?

My GF's white Nissan looks great with Pinnacle liquid souveran (after a full DA polishing of course). I've tried a few others sold here at AG but this one was best for under $40 bucks.

I'd love to hear other ideas too, but those glazes just wash off. And you said you buffed out the swirls.
