As the title suggests I am in need of what type of paintbrush is the best for applying a tire gel product (Optimum Opti-Bond is what I currently have, as well as samples of Pinnacle Onyx, Wolfgang Black Diamond but looking at Poorboy's Bold 'n Bright Gel, Auto Finesse Satin, etc.)

I went to Home Depot today to grab a brush but was overwhelmed by the selection and figured that I better get the AGO forum's advice before I move forward. Should I get foam or brush? Flat or otherwise? One for oil, water based paints, stains, etc.?

I prefer using gel over sprays because of the added control and better application of the product. Usually I use a tire swipe but since getting a sports car (vs. my previous SUV) the swipes are way too large and a paintbrush would allow me better control and less wasted product.

I have also been reading that many apply dressing into a container and then "dab" at it, then apply it to the tire. I was thinking that I would apply the dressing directly to the brush, if possible and advisable. Thank you for your input and help!

Feed back please and Happy :buffing:

I also use the Carrand brush for my tire shine application. Works extremely well. I picked it up at Pep Boys a while ago. You can't go wrong.

Even though you are looking for a paintbrush, instead of a paintbrush are you open for other options? My suggestion is to use a yellow circle foam applicator pad, that was you can massage the dressing into the pores of the tires and probably get more even coverage and into the grooves of the side wall (especially Hankook tires).

Thank you for your suggestion! I am always up for another option... How else can we find what we like!

I have Pirelli P Zero tires on my 991. Not as many groves as my Bridgestones, but enough where I look at that as a factor when choosing what I use. Nothing can be worse than the tire swipe when it comes to grooves in the sidewall, though.

this isnt a paintbrush but its an alternative...

people often laugh at me for this but i swear by it. Since my clients dont all have dedicated applicator pads i show them how to do this themselves...

The Paper Towel Technique:

Thicker, sturdier, more absorbent work best.

Just spray your tire product of choice on, evenly over the entire surface. Let soak in 2-5 min, Then fold up a paper towels into 8ths. Then simply start inside first and remove any spray that got onto rim, working outward. This will evenly disperse the product and soak up and additional to prevent sling....

If you have prepped the tire correctly the amount of black tranference from the tire will be minimal to none. This is the key to tires [and all last stage products]... the cleaning prep stage.

I use a natural bristle brush - nothing special or expensive. I've found it works way better for me than a foam pad, foam brush, or a synthetic bristle brush. Gel goes on easily and evenly and the bristles carry it into all the crevices.

My wife has a Lexus IS 250 and I prefer the (blue) buff and shine small applicator. Perfect for low profile tires. I know your asking for a brush but I haven't found a brush that distributes the product evenly.

Frankly, I'm just looking for the "perfect" applicator. Brushes seemed to be the consensus as the best under-the-tabel method so I figured I would try it, since I've tried just about everything else.

Should have named the thread "Best tire shine/gel applicator?"

I use gel tire dressings and found out that foam wax applicator pads work the best and are somewhat cheap.

The small foam brushes work really well in and around emblems too.

I'm working on a video as to how I use them to clean, polish and wax.

Even though foam applicators are cheap, wouldn't it be costly over the long haul because you have to keep buying them?

Do you apply the tire gel to the Carrand brush? or tires then spread it? These look great btw :D

I've been searching AG for my next order, so far:

Menzerna Color Lock
Pads, maybe i'll check out the MF pads
Wooly wheel brushes
MF Towels
Meguiars Window Cleaner Concentrate

And now maybe this, that and I'll wait for a sale for next month :D
