What products has anyone used to successfully remove gum from paint. I'm referring to when you're driving in hot weather and run over gum that you're unaware of and it sprays all over the side of your car like silly string. I was unable to get to it while it was soft and fresh still and it's now hardedned. Any suggestions?

Since this is your first post here...

Welcome to Autogeek Online! :welcome:

I've used ordinary Vegetable Cooking Oil to remove chewing gum out of hair and carpet. If you work the oil into the gum it will emulsify it so you can get it to release from fibers like in a carpet or hair.

I'm sure it would be much easier to remove gum off paint.

Other things you could try,

Goo Gone
Goof Off
Mineral Spirits
WD40

That's off the top of my head...

Be sure to wipe or wash the area clean first to remove any loose dirt and after you remove the gum be sure to re-apply a coating of wax.

:)

Thanks...I was going to try vegetable oil next. Goo gone didn't work and I really thought that it would. I assumed that WD-40 wouldn't since the Goo Gone didn't...but I'll try it after the vegetable oil.

Thanks again...

What are you removing the gum from? The best way to remove gum is to make it brittle by freezing it. There are freeze sprays that do this very well. Using agressive solvents like WD40 can harm the very material you are removing the Gum From. Also remember Goo Gone is Citrus based and will leave oil behind unless shampooed away. Never use the the Products "GOOF OFF" which is mistaken for GOO GONE all the time GOOF OFF will break down everything that is Sythetic such as Carpet backing, Upolstery, Head Liner material etc. - GOOF OFF shoul not be used on any part of a cars finish or interior!

Thanks "Wax Gorrilla." No, I wouldn't use "Goof Off." I remind people all the time as well that there's a difference between "Goo Gone" and "Goof Off." If you'll read my post you'll see it's on the paint due to running over gum on a hot day and it sprayed up all over the side of the car like silly string. Removing it from carpet is usually pretty easy...

Okay now that I know its on the paint take a Blow dryer on the high heat setting. heat small areas and with a NO NAP towel like a cottton diaper saturate the cloth with Goof Off or tar Remover between the HEAT and THE SOLVENT it should wipe right off. This works well for Road Line Stripe Paint also. Good Luck !

Thanks...I should have remembered the hair dryer technique. I've used it for removing pin stripes. I am going to try the vegetable oil as well just to see. Thanks again.

:iagree:I was at a Poolroom shooting, when the owner said someone had put chewing gum on a table. I watched him freeze it with a can of Freeze- It!. He then took a little scraper and easily removed it in about a minute. I have since used it when I run into it in the carpet or mats. Works Great too!

"Compressed Air. I used Memorex Air Duster brand which contains the common aerosol propellant Difluoroethane (AKA Freon). Just hold the can upside-down and lightly squeeze the trigger letting out a small stream of the freon (you don't need much for this to work). This instantly freezes the gum and turns it extremely brittle. Then I used a credit card to lightly rub back and forth on the gum. The gum is so brittle at this point it breaks up into little pieces even though it is matted and pressed into the carpet. " - Comments on How to Remove Gum From a Car's Interior | eHow.com I have never tried it but I did find this.

Thanks 08 Stang! I did not know the chemical name. But the products both have the ability to freeze gum. I was also wondering about the COLD Freeze stuff they sprayed on us when little league guys got hurt playing sports?
