What's the difference between these two?

In my experience with UC. I didn't need to polish. I'm still new at this so I'm not sure if polish will make it more pop more or not. I'll give it a try on two test spot this weekend and find one.

The only rubbing compound I ever used was 3M. It does the job i need it too then i just polish.

With Meguiars UC I wont have to polish?

-This 3M product (39002?) is said to remove fine scratches (grade 1200 or finer),
coarse swirl marks, water spots, and signs of oxidation

-I suspect its super-fine abrasives are of the DAT persuasion.

oxidation, swirls, scratches, blemishes.

-Meguiar's states that UC's ultra-fine abrasives are of the SMAT persuasion.

-Not saying this 3M compound is not up to snuff...

I just prefer using UC because it, more often than not,
leaves a smooth, swirl-free finish in one step...

-Even, in my usage, leaving the paint-film LSP-ready at times!!

I think this Meguiars Ultimate compound would be a good alternative if i do a customers car and needs a quick fix opposed to a full restoration type job.
 
Its a matter of personal preference.

Since you mention 3M product, I assume you use rotary buffer but UC is intended for DA and hand application only. So be sure to do a test spot.
 
I used a porter cable and removed the clear coat fading off the car I did using 3M (not sure the exact wording)

If I color sand i just have to go all the way up to 3000 which I always do anyway.

So i'm pretty happy with my porter cable. It's not like the Dewalt i used for a year but seems to be doing the job i needed it for. The clutch feature is a plus and also a nice add on feature.

If I was working at an Auto Body shop the porter cable wouldn't hang but what I am doing with it. It's plenty

I just used this tie on wool pad I got at the local auto paint shop.
My yellow foam pad just came in so no more tie on wool pa for me
