When did they start...

....using clear coat? Did some manufacturers begin before others, or did they all start around the same period?

Reason I ask is because I need to know when Mercedes started using clear coat. 1989? Earlier?

Also, what are some of the ways you can tell? Chalky feel?

I believe clearcoat has been around since the 70's ... that said some manufacturers still consider single-stage paint also.

Clearcoat is unpigmented paint ..

Use a light polish on a very small obscure area. If your applicator gets the color of the car on it than its SS. If the applicator doesn't turn any color its CC.
