Hello All,

Hope everyone is having a good week. Last week I was at a car show and noticed some detailers were wet sanding and polishing their cars, also their daily drivers, instead of compounding it and polishing. So when should someone wet sand their car first? I thought wet sand should not be used on a daily driver because of all the loss of paint. Is there a reason that a car needs to be wet sanded?

Wet sanding is really aggressive, so we only use it if there are deep scratches on the paint. We rarely do it in our shop and when we do, it's reserved for the worst case scenario cars. You probably don't need to do it to your own car, but if you DO, definitely check out Mike's article and do all the necessary research.

I try to avoid wet sanding any time I can. Compound and polish is the way I go for MOST details. But Mike Phillips point is spot on too!

Unless the car is a repaint and has some massive fault, avoid wet sanding. Wet sanding is basically the car care equivalent of chemo, it might fix the issue but it's the last resort and should be done sparingly. If it's a factory painted car, basically you should never wet sand.

Thank you for all of your input! I was shocked that these detailers were sanding these daily drivers down for the show. I wonder if the owners know the damage these detailers did to their cars because you can see the sanding marks in the paint as well.

Depends on their whether or not their daily drivers are repaints or not. It could be a case of they might be daily drivers or it could just be irresponsible detailers.

•IMO:
-It's not a usual and customary practice
to wet-sand daily drivers that have their
OEM BC/CC paint systems.

-It seems so much more unusual and
uncustomary to be doing so when it's
being performed at a Car Show venue.
