So I pulled the trigger and bought the DWP849X rotary polisher, what a beautiful machine!

I am looking to use the 3M pad #05711 for compounding boats. What do I need in term of attachments/adapters to use this pad? Im pretty sure the polisher comes with a 7" backing plate, but do I need a different one to use with that particular pad? And if so, do I need an adapter that goes from the polisher to the new backing plate for that pad?

Thanks!

Congrats on your 849x purchase! This is a beast and will polish boats with ease.

I see you picked up a 9" wool pad. I imagine you have quite a bit of chalky oxidation to knock off your boat. This will surely knock it off. Make sure to follow with a less aggressive foam pad such as a 3M perfect-it foam pad.

This is 3M's backing plate for your pad and the 3M foam pads.

I noticed there is 2 backing plates available, one is the 3M 05718 that you suggested but there is also the 3M 05717, what is the main difference between the two? Will the 2 work with that wool pad?

Thanks!

Others make pads to fit 3M. You pay a HEVY premium for Perfect-it pads.
