Hey guys,

Which painter's tape to I buy, what level of adhesion does it have to have? Is the green stuff too much or too little? Can I get the Blue from wal-mart which is labeled as "medium?"

Thanks for the speedy reply, any particular width? i've just been using leftovers from the garage.

Get a variety of widths... use the narrow where you can and the wider stuff where you have to.

FWIW, I've used both the blue and the green. Interchangeable as far as I could tell.

x2 for 3m green.

i get the thinnest of the two since i tend to use that the most. if i need width i just double up...

i use the blue....and truth be told, i dont tape off anymore....

I use the Blue 3M tape, sold at AutoZone for like nothing and I only really use it for 50/50 comparisons of different LSP's I'm trying out.

I also don't tape off for polishing but I'm just a dude who likes to keep his cars clean...only gotta answer to myself at the end of the day.

I buy my 3M tape from Home Depot, they have various 3M tapes based on length/width and adhesiveness.

Blue or green. They are very close. +1 for different widths.

Home depot they carry all sizes i also picked up a roll of paper that painters use to mask off windows .Brown color about 12 in wide used that with the blue tape to cover part of the windows.

i keep getting this line of residue when i remove the tape, what's the deal with that!!

Don't use the 3m blue extended release ... It doesn't stick very well.

That's where the product gets worked up under the edge. It will come off just like the polish.

I have the 3/4" yellow 3M automotive refinish masking tape; got it from my local Megs distributor for half the cost of the other tapes he had.

I need to find something other than what I tried this weekend. Used the 3M blue "edgeless" painters tape 1" roll. I can get the "model" number if needed (in case I just used the wrong one), but it left sticky residue all over the trim pieces that I taped off. Maybe temp had something to do with it, 85-90 in the garage, and I taped it off 12 hours the night before.

That particular tape is a bear to work with even in non automotive applications. Its almost impossible to remove from certain surfaces. Leaves a lot of residue. Would not recommend,

Thank for the info. Assuming you're talking the "edgeless" one I bought? I've used the regular blue last time I did this on a family member's car. I mainly bought this other kind because it was lower on the "sticky scale" printed on the packaging (2 vs. 3 for regular blue I think). I'll just throw the rest out then. I really thought I'd done something wrong for a minute there. (besides buy the wrong tape lol)

edit: this is the one I bought 3M US: ScotchBlue? Brand - Product Catalog

Since we are discussing tape, Mike Phillips suggests pulling the tape back rather than pulling it up. (Hard to describe in words. Sorry.) Basically, be careful to peel it back on itself. If you pull it up you run the risk of peeling paint with it. This may also lead to residue sticking to the car, rather than peeling with the tape. (Last sentence was my thought, not Mike's.)
