Which work light brand are you using?

I'm trying to find a good work light to use while detailing. So far I been at Lowes and they had Utilitech 1000 watt for 35 bucks. Home depot had one called Workforce for 30 bucks for 1000 watts. Home Depot also had Huskee for 44 for 1200 watts, but Dave said he had a hard time with adjusting them.
 
If there is a "Harbor Freight" facility nearby (or go to their website: harborfreight.com) they have a 1000 watt halogen unit comprised of two (2) 500 watt halogen lamps mounted on a height adjustable tripod. I use them and now have excellent illumination to spot all paint defects (groan)
 
The dual 500 watt Halogen tripod from Walmart, pretty sure it was less than $20. You get what you pay for in construction and material quality of the tripod, but it just sits there not like it needs to be heavy duty in your home garage. Get good replacement bulbs when they burn out.
 
So just get the cheapest one? That is over 1000 watts? Yeah I'm not going be moving it around much.

Menards carries them.The duals are 500watts each (1000watts) and the single is (500watts).
 
Tractor supply had dual 500 watt tripods on sale for $19.95....the ones at Home depot are removable from the tripod which could be a good thing.....either way they all work great

The duals in the foreground appear to be the same as mine, made by Regent.They are removeable from the stand and the center handle contains a spare bulb. I didn't have much luck finding replacement bulbs locally, I grabbed a half dozen off Amazon to round out an order for free shipping. Like everything else, if you have 'em you probably won't need them. I've seen these locally at Ace & Handyman Hardware stores for around 40 bucks.

I also have a red Craftsman 1000 watt dual stand. Not quite as well constructed as the Regents, no spare bulb or place to stash one. The Craftsman switches allow you to go to half-power/250 watt on either side. Not something I've ever found a use for when detailing. You can't have too much light!

It's very convenient to have a stand behind you and off to the side with another set facing you to judge reflectivity and preclude shadows. Less moving 'em around as you work as well.

Whatever you get, the housings get hotter than bejeezus in a very short time! :eek:

Always been kinda surprised AG doesn't offer these.

I have seen the Husky lights at Home Depot. They put out 1400 W total with two halogen bulbs in each light.
 
I went with the work force work lights. It was 29.99 and it has 1000 watts. I bought this over the cheaper 20 dollar one because you can detach it from the tripod, so that its easy to put into my small car.

I'll let you guys know how it is.

Has anybody tried the LED work lights? It doesn't seem like they could provide enough lighting and they're way more expensive, but maybe I'm wrong.
 
I got the twin 500 setup from Harbor Freight. What's ironic is that they do not carry the replacement bulbs :laughing:
 
I think mine (the dual head at least) is the 1000 watt from Lowes. What I like about it is the head removes with the pull of a knob and you can set it on the floor. What I had problems with however is the bottom section of the adjustment has a pin in it (in the inside of the bottom tube) that kept falling out. I finally just wrapped a few turns of blue painters tape around the bottom (inside) tube then stuffed it back in there. I adjust the top section up and down all the time, just don't adjust the bottom.

My son got me another (single head) halogen for Christmas to use on the floor.

Yes, I have one. It's the $99 one from Northern Tool. It puts out a lot of light, it's NOT hot and peeling your skin, AND you can put it anywhere you want without getting burned OR worrying about the fragile filament in a halogen that'll burn out if you bump it too hard when it's blazing hot.

Working on a new light (added light) setup for the garage though. Putting up 6 dual-head fixtures on the end of my overhead lights with PAR38 5000K LED floods. :)

I have the Utilitech 1000 lumen LED work light and the Utilitech 3000 lumen LED work light with light stand, both work awesome. they give off a huge amount of light and very little heat.
