Hi all, I was claying a 2012 xterra and as I was claying, clay pieces seem to stick to my hand. I was using chemical guys luber but I doubt that was the issue. It also started to deteriorate. So I just threw it away once I was done because it was uncomfortable to work with. Anyone know why this happens?

Possibly contaminated with some APC or degreaser.

I've been having this since like last year but I used it approximately three times. Oh and sorry I forgot to mention that this is the Mothers clay bar. Its half of a bar.

Have you used any of the clay extender liquid when you stored the clay?

I had the same problem with Mother's clay. I won't buy it again. I used Optimum clay today and it worked great. I also have started using gloves during detailing because my hands were cracking bad from drying out.

Since you posted this information elsewhere:

Where else have your hands been lately? :D

Bob

My hands have been in........ Nothing but wash mitts and towels :D

No. There was a time when I tried to make clay lube by mixing Turtle wax Rinseless wash 1:1 to make clay lube and that made it weird. Maybe that's the problem?

I did this once and my clay came out the next time like the OP. It was the BF clay extender. Now I spray with clay lube before I store it and it comes out fine. I use BF RW diluted to clay lube strength per instructions. Never had a problem since. When I use the extender during a clay job, I rinse the clay real well before I fold it so that I'm constantly removing the clay extender from the surface of the clay. I also store inside year round.

Can it possibly be because its old?

What was the temperature when you were using it? I use Griots clay, and it does that to me when it gets into the 80s or warmer.

Personally, never had a problem during high heat and humidity. However, if you keep your clay in the garage during a high heat and humidity spell, then I could see it falling apart like that. If you store inside and only bring it out when you are ready to clay, then put it right back after you are done, there shouldn't be an issue.

Age, I don't know. I don't have any clay that is more than 1 year old. It's all sat in the house and all the same consistency since it was purchased.

The only time clay has ever stuck to my hand was when it sat in my hot garage for a month. So age and temp could play a role

Yeah I'd say age and temp are one part of it, then something along the way (clay lube, extender, etc.) have played a part in it. I had some Mother's do that over a year ago, maybe in 2012. :dunno: I used to use only Megs M34 as clay lube, then started using ONR (in QD strength) and haven't had it happen since. Then again.... I hardly EVER used clay anymore, not since Nanoskin hit the streets! :D

We recommend using our Showtime Instant Detailer. We've tested it and know it works properly.

You mentioned you've used the clay 3 times with 2 other lubricants over the past year. How has it been stored since it was removed from the wrapper?

It appears the clay has dried out. It could be from improper storage, combined with the time spent out of the wrapper; or the various lubricants used.

I store it on a soap traveler container that I bought from Walmart. But I agree that it has dried out due to other lubricants. I used it with the turtle wax rinseless wash diluted as a lube. I noticed that after I used it, it was drying out and not getting any contamination.

A 'trick' to storing clay is to place it in a good quality 'zip-lock' bag.

Put the clay in the baggie, give it a spritz or two of QD, seal it up the put in to the soap dish.

All I can say is, "Works for me."
