Hello all,

I'm going on a 14 day cruise and will need to protect the car from bird bombs, especially under the hot Aussie summer. It will be a one off use or maybe once a year use thing whilst I travel.

My main concern is do the covers scratch the car even after washing ?

Car covers are never a bad idea. Covercraft is one of the best and has different models with varying degrees of scratch resistance and protection.
Covercraft Car Covers offer protection and an attractive fit in a variety of fabrics & patterns! dustop, evolution, cover craft, truck, custom,

Just a thought but how about renting a storage unit to park your car in for said period.

You won't have to worry about bird bombs and wind and rain. Not sure how it compares price wise but may be cheaper for the short term.

Thought about that but it works out to be $150 - $250.

I might just have to cough up the money and get an expensive cover. Just seems like such a waste of money since I won't be using it heaps. I was hoping to spend $50

You could always get creative and do a DIY with blankets, a tarp, and duct tape. ;)

The ones rated for outdoor are really expensive. I would be using this for 14 days, then maybe 45 days next year.

For your stated purposes for using a car cover:

I'm sure there are less expensive ones available
at some of the Aussie auto discount stores.

I'd bet that some Super cheap auto stores
have them starting around $35.

If you get a cover remember to remove it off the car properly. People will tend to roll it up over the car and get the dirt on top inside the liner. They wind up scratching it because the dirt is now rubbing on the paint when the car is covered back up.

What is the wind like in your area ?. A cover outside and wind is a recipe for disaster that I know of first hand. Not only does the cover keep rubbing on the panel edges but sand/dirt blows in there and you have an instant sander. When I did not have a carport/garage I bought one of the fabric tent types from Costco and parked my truck in there which meant nothing touched the body. I think it was $150 to $175. If parked in a garage a cover is very good but when parked outside not so good IMO. Some times you have to weigh the differences and make your decision.

I live in a fairly windy area.

I don't mind washing the car before hand and it will be waxed. I'm just concerned about dirt getting in there and scratching the paint for 12 days.

I'll research more about those car tents.

When I go away for >1 week, I always cover my car. Some may say it is overkill for a car parked in a garage, but when you have kids with slinging backpacks and a wife who's carrying tons of stuff (including sometimes kicking and screaming kids), I feel like it's money well spent.
