Acronyms and Abbreviations

Hi Mike,
I think I ran across a dictionary of sorts somewhere on the forum where you have a list of acronyms and abbreviations that are commonly used on here, but darn if I can find it! Could you provide the link to it? The one in particular that is driving me nuts right now is "ONR".:confused:

If I recall, the acronym finder we have here is way out of date.

ONR = Optimum No-Rinse (Wash & Shine)
ONRWW = Optimum No-Rinse Wash & Wax

Acronyms


Just to note, acronyms are the lingo used on forums because typically most people don't want to type out all the words in a product's name. That's how forums work and there's NOTHING that will ever stop it or put the genie back into the bottle so to speak.

I'm kind of a speed typist and I also know that we bring a LOT of new people from the "real" world to the "forum" world and these people don't always know what everyone is talking about when they use acronyms. For this reason I rarely use them myself and almost always type out the full name of products when discussing them with forum members, especially new forum members. Like

Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover 3.0

instead of

WTSR

Thank you for the kind words and appreciating my forum writing style.

I always say you can get an accurate idea of a person's character through their posting history which is their writing style and I always want my posting history to be accurate, consistent and reflect a professional manner in the online world.

Mike, I think I actually started a thread on this at one time, it seems to be really hard to find "that acronym thread" here...there is no link in any of the places you'd normally look...and the thread(s?) we have all seem to be lacking. Part of the problem is if a regular member starts an acronym thread, they can't go back later and edit the original post to update the list as necessary, without the help of a moderator.

I know all of you that work at Autogeek are very busy, but it seems like maybe Nick or Bryan or Ray should start a thread with the acronym list in the first post, then members can post in the thread if they feel an acronym needs to be added and the OP can add it to the first post. And the thread needs to be easy to find.

Guidance from AP Stylebook to avoid "Alphabet Soup".

It is proper language usage to spell something out the first time it is mentioned in a document or post with the acronym in parentheses.

Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover 3.0 (WTSR)

Later references in the document can use the abbreviation WTSR.


Since we are such a formal group around here

I like that idea. I too looked in the normal forum groups where I assumed it would be a "sticky" and alas... it could not be found.

I found the one I posted via a link in a non-related thread I found doing a search using the word acronyms.

Thanks for the writing lesson, I actually do type that way when I'm in a hurry.


Now if you can just get everone else in the online world to follow that pattern...

That's also a really good point, I try to do that if I sense that the OP/previous poster will not recognize the acronyms.

Foreword:
What follows is in my honest opinion.

-Harnessing the power of a forum's particular "group" is often a daunting task.

-It's the ability to bring about changes in an "informal-group", (such as this thread's title alludes to),
that succeeds in positively reinforcing the "formal-group's" goals.
(With this aforementioned "formal group" being, of course, AGO's forum.)


NOTE:
Pardon my overuse of: "group('s)".
Right or Wrong: I just felt compelled to do so.

That actually makes sense. Say the word followed by the abbreviation.

Keep it Simple Simon (KISS) :D
