Dewalts...going bad? I've had mine for a few years and haven't had one problem, and it was heavily used when I bought it. From what I understand, that's pretty typical. Mine is built like a tank.

Which DeWALT?
I'd agree that at least the new DeWALT 849X, aka the Bumblebee is built like a tank. I tortured it last week on the 24' Pro-Line and it chopped of oxidized gel-coat like nobody's business.

This is how you lean into the buffer....
DeWALT 849X sans handle and grabbing the rubber overmold on the head of the unit and the pushing down hard...
I've used a bunch of Milwalkie's in my life, they always worked great, just didn't care for the bulkiness and weight.
What's going wrong with your dewalt? You should be able to get years of reliable service from a polisher. Unless its exposed to water, or tossed around.
It might just need a tune up, my dad has had a rotary since the mid 80's when he owned his body shop. He still uses it on his cars and boat today. He's replaced the brushes, and cords a few times. The handle is a screwdriver now, but still works great!
Maybe take it to an authorized repair place to have them check it out.

The Milwaukee is heavy, built like a tank, and there's still models floating around that Christopher Columbus brought over! LOL
Same with the Milwaukee 1/2" Electric Drills, I've used them for the better part of 30 years in a railroad yard. You can't break them.
And they'll break your wrist if you seize them in a piece of metal, I know.
Nothing weird about the Milwaukees, you can place many a backing plate, and pads of choice, just like any other rotary out there.
Don't think of the Milwaukee as some "black sheep" of rotary tools, it isn't.

Definitely something not right here my friend, my Dewalt's have been bullet proof. I still have one. I use it once in a while just for old time sake, but rotaries are dead, the days of sniffing the dirt are over.
