Show & Shine: Black '69 Camaro SS Pro-Touring

OH and +2 on favorite SS year!! that and a Chevelle SS of the same vintage.

I have been told that the husband of a lady I used to go to church with has about 8 or more vintage and classic mussel cars. Heck they are beyond Sunday cars, they are never see the light of day cars. I think they are a myth, but I have a friend who has done contract work for him and said they are real. Darn shame he won't share with the rest of us. There is a car show in town this weekend, I was thinking of nosing around and seeing what the paint looiked like, but not sure if I want to approach that yet, due to what has been said about the attitude of some of them.

Nice work! That's now a great looking car again.
I could be wrong but I think Cowl Induction badges were only on Chevelles and El Caminos. So what sort of pro-touring mods does it have?

IM astonished! He must have done all he could to even STAY STANDING!!! Amazing job on that one.

He is a hard guy to read but I could definitely see that we was not just surprised but impressed. Great feeling for sure! Thanks for the compliments.

Wow, amazing work on a gorgeous car :xyxthumbs:

I really like what you said about Saturday cars, Sunday cars and DD's :)

The nomenclature is something I have been using for years in trying to describe my resto-mod '68 GT Fastback (mustang). I like to say that she is only going to be driven on "Saturday night"! So she will be a driven top end show car. Sadly she is not done yet :( I have way too many projects and way too little time

Wow...just wow.

It's posts like this that continue to make me realize I have so much to learn. I'm in awe of your efforts - the owner must have been absolutely stunned!

Thanks for posting this and describing your process. Time to get signed up for Mike's weekend class (next year :( ).

Truly amazing job!

This comment warms my heart. I too was in your shoes and eager to learn after being "inspired". Sadly, I learned most of my skills before the internet and the community outreach you are benefiting from. Don't get me wrong, I am still learning :) I am very sure that one day soon I will a thread from you that will stir my juices again! Keep it up, it only gets better :dblthumb2:

Glad you enjoyed the Show and Shine. I agree that it is a shame that those vintage cars are not "shared" with the world.

If you do end up at a car show, you will have this anxious urge to "save them all". The few times I went, I was looking at those cars with the same manic urge to rescue them as if I had come across a puppy stranded on the side of a busy highway!! That is one of the reasons I don't want to attend anymore.

Nice work! That's now a great looking car again.

As I mentioned before I am a Ford man so can't really verify the legitimacy SS badging or other little subtleties that may have been cosmetically added to this car. I did chat the owner but being that it was a new toy, and is not a fanatical Camaro owner, he did not know with 100% certainty either. I know a lot of mods were made to the car, from the engine (383 stroker, high rise intake etc..), to the suspension (the car was lowered substantially), to the transmission (overdrive was installed), to rearend (I want to say 3.73 gear ratio) etc... I am sure he will research her a little bit but at this time I have more questions than answers

Gorgeous!!!
Thanks bud.... Glad you enjoyed!

It's sad to see such a nice car looking so abused ... but man did you get it looking good again!

Absolutely great job. :xyxthumbs:

It has been a little while since I posted a Show and Shine and I though this car would be a good one for you to feast your eyes on.

The Subject: 1969 Camaro SS Pro-Touring w/ a 383 Stroker

The customer contacted me shortly after picking up his new toy because he was somewhat disappointed with the state she was in. He tried describing the issues he was having over the phone but it was clear that we had a little "lingo" barrier, so we made arrangements for him to drop her off. He described to me that when he purchased the car, he made arrangements with the builder/previous owner to get white strips painted on it. She had seen a full resto-mod and was fairly recently painted but they had elected to keep the stripes off.

At the time he dropped off his car he did not want to talk about prices he just wanted the scratches gone..... This is my kind of customer! By the way, the sound of that engine and exhaust made the hair on the back of my neck stand on attention. I did attempt to describe the process but it was obvious that he did not care. He told me to keep the car as long as needed to make it right. Upon inspection this is what I found......

Can someone see that the painter/builder went crazy with the rotary? The back 2 c-pillars and rear quarters were full of holograms.... and the rest of the car showed typical scratches and swirls. A few RIDS were discovered in front of the driver side rear quarter (as shown above) and on the roof (not shown). I definitely had a lot of questions but the owner was adamant that I just take care of it.

A few test spots were done and the best combination was selected. The car underwent a 2 step polishing. The rims were hand polished and sealed, the tires cleaned and dressed and a basic interior was done. The engine bay was clean and no time or money was needed to be thrown at it (since he had no intention of bringing it to a car show).

Process

Exterior
- Wheels: Iron X with various brushes
- Tire: Cleaned with Meguiar D101
- Wash: ONR QD dilution with MF towel
- Decontamination: Nanoskin fine with ONR lube dilution
- Dry: Waffle Weave Towels
- RIDS: Wet sanded to 3000 grit
- Compounding/Polish: PF2500 on 5.5" Orange LC Light Cutting Pad via Rupes LHR21ES (speed 5.5 x 6 passes) and 3" hydrotech Pads via GG6 (speed 6); This was followed by SF4000 on 5" LC white pad (Speed 5 x 5 passes)
- IPA Wipedown
- Eraser Wipedown (CarPro Eraser)
- Protection: CG Blacklight machine applied topped with PW54x
- Tires Dressing: Pinnacle Black Onyx
- Glass: Pinnacle Crystal clear

Interior
- Vacuum
- Dash, trim, and vinyl Protected with Blackfire interior protectant

As you can imagine, the owner could not be anything less than thrilled to get rid of all that mess. It took me a few minutes to kinda make sense of the lingo he was using in describing what he was seeing, but it was plain as the nose on my face what he wanted. Well, he did come and pick it up 2 days later and was ASTONISHED! He had some expectation but did not anticipate what he finally saw. One of his employee came to drop him off and had his 2 boys with him and he corralled them in a hurry when he saw them lunging for the car with hands outstretched. The expression on the customer's face was priceless. His last parting comment was that he was bringing her home and he may not want to drive it now, LOL!

Hope you enjoyed! As usual, feel free to comment and/or ask questions....

Have you had the opportunity to checkup on any of the latest SON1C Wax protowax durability?

Why do you use the rupes over say the GG (I think you have it delegated to 3" use now?) or the flex? I have been using blackopz , jsou , and sunshyne 's rupes as well as a couple days with the flex, but I'm having trouble pulling myself away from my tried and true GG

Some of the most amazing work I've ever seen, I am in awe of what you have done. In my best days I doubt I could have accomplished this.

I am quite humbled by the level of response in this thread, and truly feel privileged in receiving such accolades. If I have missed an acknowledgment, please consider this an all out "thank you!!".

Drew, I guess you would be the man to comment on the fact that I've used the PW54x again in this Show and Shine (PW54x = Son1cWax Prototype 54x). After a little tinkering and getting used to an "all natural product", I have come to really like the wax. It offers stunning results, and as reported in one of my previous thread, it did outlasted my "used to be" go-to which was Pete 53. There are clear distinctions between the application and removal of both waxes but the bead, the shedding effect, the optical qualities and the longevity are some of the reason why I decided to put Pete 53 on the shelf for the time being. I've used the PW on 7 vehicles so far (with the customer permission to use their vehicle for testing in exchange for a wax upgrade) and so far I've revisited all but 1 of the cars and I am still happy to have made the transition. It is true that I was not a big fan of the earlier Protowax, but I really believe that you hit a high note with this one. I did want to ask, was PW54x the final formulation used in the production of your Carnaubavore wax?, or did you tinker with it some more before releasing it to the public?

For all reading, just in case you missed my previous raving comments on the wax (in addition to the qualities mentioned above)..... #1 It smells just AWESOME and #2 You use sooooo little product that this wax will last you for years to come. Truly an exceptional product!!

As for your question regarding the Rupes over the GG. I still use both in correction. I do prefer the Rupes because of the vibration (lack thereof) and exceptional correction. Because my hands are so important to my primary work, I do need to take every step and precaution to avoid chronic overuse condition such as carpal tunnel syndrome. My 15 year old son ends up using the GG when helping me in correction. The GG does have the 3" BP and pads for those small areas, and does have some brush attachments for doing carpets and upholstery, but it is still part of the arsenal for major paint correction.

It's well deserved 'Claude! :xyxthumbs:

Thank you for the kind words on the wax, and your input has been invaluable in the research & design for all of my waxes especially Carnaubavore.
SON1C Wax ProtoWax 54x and Carnaubavore are very very close. The tweaks are so minimal one could basically say they are the same.
I'm also looking forward to your thoughts on wax #2 and #3(synthetic)

Excellient input on the gg/rupes, the reduced vibrations in the rupes really are a great change of pace as compared with the GG
