Outrageously priced products...

At this rate one could say spending more than a couple grand on a car is pointless, might as well all pick up used Geo Metros. I mean it's just a car who would want to have fun. Then as we look back we can admire our bank accounts not our lives haha.

Cars for the most part are an ego purchase for most people.

It's transportation really, if people think about it practically.

Point a to point b and maybe to c then back to a for the most part.

Anything other than that is pure ego.....

Example, apples to apples, please.

You can get entry level BMW's starting around $33k although I do not know how many you will find. Some domestics cars have similar base prices and easily get into $45k quickly.

Cadillac Escalade MSRP starts at $67,000 plus fees

Porsche Cayenne MSRP starts at $53,000 plus fees. I optioned mine out with $15,000 in options for a total of ~$68,000 plus fees. Cadillac Escalade is no where in the same league as a Porsche Cayenne.

To top things off, Cadillac dealerships (at least where i live) have a humongous markup. Porsche does not allow dealer markups.

If you want to boil everything down to what is worth by summing the "cost" of the components, one could make the argument a human being is only worth the $3 of carbon they contain.

It's a silly argument. One guy's logic says a BMW Is a frivolous purchase, but in reality the frivolity of any purchase is relative to one's wants and financial position.

A guy in China may see a 3 cylinder econobox as luxurious because he earns 16k U.S. a year and is fine driving a moped. On the other hand a CEO for a medical equipment manufacturing firm who earns a multi million dollar yearly salary may earn enough in a few weeks to purchase a 70k $ BMW.

Exactly. Add, for me anyway, the enjoyment of driving and I'm fine with paying a "premium" for a car that not only goes from a to b to c, but does it with power, comfort, and sure, some style - although I really couldn't care less what others think of what I drive.

I wouldnt buy a car strictly for transportation purposes. I want i can DD with a sense of pride so to speak. Plus having some extra power once in while is nothing to complain about :D

"Porsche does not allow dealer markups"

How is that possible?

Do they make 100% of their profit on $300 oil changes?

Sounds like someone drives a beater...
:)

It really isn't always about ego.
I own a Porsche and I'm a pca member and frequent the planet-9 forum.
That is, in general, the most down-to-earth group of people. All types, but one thing in common: they LOVE cars. Absolutely passionate about them. And if it were really about ego, most if them could afford a much more expensive or prestigious vehicle.

There are certainly a good share of douchebags that buy a car just to show they can, but don't make the mistake of assuming that there aren't people out there who buy to track their vehicles and to purely enjoy driving (vs it being an appliance, as you stated).

An Escalade and Cayenne are surely not in the same league, noone says they are either. One has driving dynamics and one doesn't, one is all about image and the other is not, no wait, LOL! One has a plush ride and portrays an image, one doesn't, one looks good with "double dueces" and slightly above, the other doesn't and finally, one holds its retail value while another one REALLY doesn't!

Like I said, compare apples to apples, someone spoke about a Beemer being $33k and some domestic cars being in the mid $40's loaded, apples and oranges.

Trucks.

Who would have ever thought that a consumer truck would approach $70,000?

This turned into a my vehicle choice is better than yours thread...does it really make people feel better to slam people's choices in vehicles, yet somehow try to validate their own? I don't get it, who cares...if someone has the means to spend $xxK on a vehicle, then so be it. I really, really enjoy driving my $70K "leather plastic and faux wood" car....so what's it to ya? I'm enlisted AF and that's where I chose to spend my hard earned money...and?

Sorry for the rant fellas...I truly never understood why being so passive aggressive behind a keyboard makes people feel so good about themselves.

It's all relative, of course.

It's funny. I was talking about it the other day. I ride a motorcycle more than I drive a car (miles wise). That's because my car takes me where I need to go, with the fastest route possible. My bike takes me where I WANT to go, and usually a nice windy way! Lots of motorcycle touring, and even commuting with it alot.

But; anyway- I was looking at maybe a new bike. Looking at a couple nice touring bikes, would be in the $20~$25k range. Didn't seem like a bad price. Yet the Focus we just ordered was $16,700 thanks to incentives, rebates, AND a Ford family/friends employee discounts ($22,000 MSRP), and I was thinking $16.7k was a lot of money for what amounts to nothing more than a middle-of-the-road small car daily driver. But there's a heck of a lot less features and steel on a $25,000 motorcycle I wouldn't mind paying for!

I'm one who doesn't spend a lot on cars. Not that I wouldn't get joy out of owning a porsche, or a BMW, or even a late model Mustang or something. But I just like to spend my money elsewhere. I'm ALSO not one to think everyone else is 'dumb' for spending a lot on cars. I have two motorcycles (Well, I have one and my wife has one), those two combined, added to the MSRP of my Focus could get me Mustang GT Convertible. So, what I spend on transportation isn't any less than some guy who spent close to $40k on a car, I just 'spread it out a little'. And that's base MSRP. Let's not talk about the accessories :)

Now if I had unlimited disposable income; that'd probably be a Porsche Cayman as a daily driver along with a few high end sportscars and a fleet of motorcycles of varying types :) Hehehe.

Everyone has their hobbies and are entitled to spend money on what they please.

Good points Roman....now to add to the OP's direction of the thread....

No keyboard badass here. Ask for an apples to apples comparison and I'll give it to you. European isn't always over priced

Certainly not over priced. You really do get what you pay for, and the market guarantees it. The market is the great equalizer, and the market is not stupid. I'm a member and lurker of many automotive forums and blogs, and my eyeballs tend to gravitate to the comments sections. What I find both amusing and sad is how polarized internet automotive enthusiasts are. What I've found to be the case is that most people actually are NOT automotive enthusiasts at all, they're XYZ brand enthusiasts. Or an enthusiast of a market segment. Or enthusiasts of a country of manufacture. It's very similar to religion. There's no winning any argument, there's no rationality, thought, or objectivity. It's purely emotional.

I happen to be of the opinion that American autos are some of the lowest quality and poorly designed products in the market place. They have one advantage, and that is price. They make inexpensive cars that are inexpensive to maintain, which appeal to people who are not willing or able to pay a whole lot for a vehicle. And that's fine... like I said, you get what you pay for. But their legions of fans take it into the realm of the bazaar and somehow are of the opinion that their Chevy Cruz is a superior quality vehicle to your $120k Porsche CS because their $12k Chevy doesn't require random $4k maintenance once a year. What it comes down to is that's what they own, and for some reason everyone gets a big head about what they own. It typically makes them have a complete inability to be critical of it.

Over the years, I've found that most of the time it's pretty much pointless to have a conversation with any of these people, and I have to bite my tongue every time I am reading their comments.
