Really???

You've made solid points but the "rural Merica" is not exactly correct, let me explain. I go down to the Tail of the Dragon every year, since 2003 and you wouldn't believe the number of Toyota pick up trucks, older ones from the 80's and into the 90's, Nissan p/u's are next and older B2000's (Mazda versions) I was shocked at first because I thought the "good ol' boys" would have Chevy and Fords but no, Toyota's DOMINATE! I think its because of reliability to be honest, plus their smaller and better on gas.

Yep. Times are-a-changin'. I think where I am is a little slower to adopt. Though the closure of a number of American plants has made a lot of them change their minds. Why be loyal to a company that isn't loyal to you?

Out here it's a lot of Chevy pickups owned by the good ol' boys, Ford pickups owned by the contractors and farmers and anyone else who 'works' with their trucks, and a few Dodge's sprinkled in there somewhere. Rarely do you see an import pickup, and few imports of any kind (I'd say less than 20% but that's just a guess).

Of course, I don't drive an import right now either so I guess I'm contributing :P. Though mine and my wifes motorcycles are imports. (That's a funny one, by the way, a guy with a Nissan pickup but a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, scoffing at import bikes because they aren't American made. Happens all the time!)

I could be wrong but HD is more about image than anything, or its just that sound it makes, the import bikes just don't sound like that.

There's American cars I do limke but they cost a lot, so I'll just have to stick with my Honda CRZ for right now, its fun to drive and great on gas, not to mention reliable, something I need after having had an R56 MINI, Monica knows all about that;-)

I think image is a lot of it. Harley sells that big time. You're only 'cool' and an 'individual' on a Harley. Hey, if the marketing works; then go for it! But they have some big reliability issues in the last few years. I prefer my metric cruiser. Reliable, fun, comfy, everything I want! Especially when I ride 15k+ a year.

You ride a lot and it makes sense that you don't want to "ride a mile, wrench a mile", huh! While we're on the topic of bikes and bikers, IMO it must suck that if you own and ride a HD you have to dress up in a costume everytime you go out. Bikes are very popular here in Chicagoland and it seems that 9 oout of 10 HD'ers always have HD gear on, color coordinated, do rags, MIA-POW flags, etc (I have nothing against supporting freedom and our troops) You mentioned the "your not cool unless you've got an HD" and I think that thinking spills over into the "I'm more patrotic than you because of my flags" group as well. I'd love to hear a Corvette and Porsche guy have a convo about their cars. Speaking of that, lots of love for the C7 in this monthes MT, finished behind the Porsche 911 Carrera 4s but ahead of the F12 Ferarri!

Well Harley does have one very reliable bike out there. Only problem is, it's the only one without a Harley-Davidson 'Twin-Cam' or 'Evolution' engine. They call it the 'Revolution' engine but it's actually made by none other than Porsche! It's everything other Harley engines aren't, overhead cam, liquid cooled, advanced fuel injection.

Nothing against H-D. They are cool bikes, and like DetailKitty said, it's not always just about reliability. BUT, they aren't the bikes for me.

The costume thing, well we see that in the automotive world too. Porsche banner on the wall, Porsche toolbox, Porsche windbreaker, Porsche mechanics gloves, replace 'Porsche' with Corvette, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mustang, or any other 'car guy' car at any price point, and you're gonna see it.

For the record there's some functionality in a lot of that 'stuff' they wear. I wear different boots when I ride, that are oil-resistant and have lots of traction (never know what you're stepping in at a stop), I tend to wear comfortable but functional clothes that keep the fatigue level down and offer some protection in the event of a crash, etc. Though, I don't think I own a single piece of clothing labeled 'Kawasaki Vulcan' (which is what I ride). Guess if someone gave it to me for free or it was the same price as an unlabeled item I was already gonna buy it'd be one thing.. but yeah.

I recently got some new boots when my old ones wore out. Went into a Harley dealer since a friend told me they had some. Basically, it's 4 or 5 styles of work boot, black, with a Harley-Davidson logo, for around $200+. Forget it! I still spent almost $200 on my boots, but I got much thicker leather, zip-up sides (nice when you are commuting and will be changing shoes when you get where you are going!), armor plating, oil resistant, thick soles that are BOLTED on and thus can be replaced with hand tools (no glue). A lot more boot for the money without a logo on them. Go figure.

I don't begrudge guys who own and love Harley's. But, they aren't for me. And, I do think H-D is an example of what happens when your fanbase is loyal and doesn't demand innovation. 30 or 40 years ago, those bikes would be great. But now we are in an age where guys are putting 100k+ on a motorcycle, and an engine known for needing a complete tear-down and rebuild between 30~50k, with major common component failures (cam chain oilers and tensioners, top ends failing prematurely), just should not cut it. Harley loyal should not accept sub-par reliability. BUT, I also read where the average Harley selling price is ABOVE MSRP. Compared to Japenese bikes which are generally pretty easy to wheel-and-deal with (My wifes was a model year leftover but brand new, MSRP $9,699, listed for $8,299, took it out the door for $6,000 even). So, why innovate? Which, back to our original point, is EXACTLY why American cars became crap for so many years. No need to waste money on engineers and innovation when you have so little competition; only other domestic autos who are doing just as poor of a job as you are. But when people started buying the Japenese cars? Things changed!

Harley-Davidson is finally changing, too. Introducing the first liquid cooled touring bikes they've ever had, and now three engines on the Porsche-designed 'Revolution' platform. And for the first time in more than 30 years, they've majorly redesigned the styling of their Electra-Glide touring model (can you imagine if cars went almost 50 years without a styling update?). So, evidently the same thing is happening to HD. Which is great! Maybe my tone will change in a few years when they really start innovating in response to a huge jump in Japanese motorcycle sales! For the record, the '08 recession was great on the motorcycle industry, not immediately,but shortly after people started buying motorcycles. Not for cheap transportation; because they aren't, I get 48mpg in my bike, 40mpg in my car. But my bike needs two tires that cost over $200 a piece every 10,000 miles! BUT, because middle class workers who were down a notch, but not to the point of starving, were no longer taking vacations, buying sportscars, and were downsizing their homes. They took some of that extra money, and bought a motorcycle! Truly the cheapest way to have a sportscar is to put it on two wheels! (Even one of those 'slow' cruisers like mine will out perform the family car by a lot!). But, they weren't buying Harley's as much as they were Kawasaki, Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha!

By the way, here's a 1976 FLHR;

Here's a 2012;

Motorcycle styling doesn't move very fast! LOL.

I agree about the function of the clothes with a bike but from what I see its style over function, Harley this and Harley that. Your also correct about car costumes too but I see it more with Ferrari guys than Porsche guys. Its been said they, Ferrari, make more off of merchandise than the cars, LOL! Corvette people are like this too and IMO some of the "add ons" for Vettes should be outlawed, if I were king for a day, LOL!!

I had the Red Corvette out on the track the other night.

Without a doubt, it wasn't the Bonneville Salt Flats...
But it was still quite bonny to be driving at 145-150 mph with
the air conditioning on and listening to satellite radio.

Now I forget the exact togs that I was wearing...
But I'm sure they were the pièce de résistance
for really achieving that track-ready styling.

:)

Harley Davidson actually DOES make more on clothing and accessories than they do the bikes!

To each their own I guess.

I guess I can understand it a little though. I mean if I grew up drooling over a corvette, saved my pennies, worked hard, and finally one day was finally able to afford a Corvette, I might be proud enough to put a banner up in my garage or have a Corvette jacket!

But I do agree. When everything you wear has the logo on it, it gets a little silly. I know some Harley guys that pretty much only wear Harley stuff. Even when they are in their cars, they have to have a Harley t-shirt on. That gets it a little too far, I think.

Roman, what year Corvette did you buy with those pennies and hard work?

Oh I was just bringing up an example. I don't own a Corvette. No I'd rather have an immaculate 60's or 70's Cougar or even one of those new Shelby GT500's!

I drive a Focus :D

Cougars are nice rides, even the 71-73's when they started to get big, stopped paying attention starting for the 74' model year....HUUUGE! No shame in the Focus, is it modded? If not, maybe some Focus SVT wheels to make it a little more sporting.

Bob, what year is your Corvette? I thought you had a metallic beige C5 w/ C6 wheels:-P

Ha! I love how this thread is talking about American-versus import now... and now bikes! :dblthumb2:

I'm not a fan of Harleys..... they are slow, loud, not very reliable and cost a FORTUNE. Our one friend just bought a new one and it was $30K!!! That's a nice new car!!!!!!
Technology-wise, they have interesting electronics now (the higher-end ones) but they still have old engine/performance technology. They had one line emerging/branching that was innovative and performed great and what did they do? They killed it. Lame.

I don't have an import versus american mentality. It's whatever suits my needs. We have 4 cars and a motorcycle in the house currently:
MINI
Saturn
Jeep
Dodge
Kawasaki

Though the domestics all belong to my husband (minus the Kawasaki bike), he usually drives imports. It just worked out this way right now. Though we are looking to trade the Dodge truck in on a Toyota truck. I mentioned getting a Ford since I am on the family Z plan, but he's sold on the Toyota. Ok. I don't care either way.

Thanks for asking!

We have:
2002 Light Pewter Metallic...Convertible
2007 Victory Red...Coupe

And to be back on topic:
I don't use any Adam's products on either one of them.

Well now, the SLOW one I don't care about. I know a lot of sportbike guys/gals who scoff at us Cruiser guys/gals because our bikes are slow, but so what? We aren't on a race track! I do like a little low-end pull, but I bought it to cruise and travel. Love long distance touring. My sportbike friends never seem to want to go on a 700 mile ride with me??? LOL. I wouldn't mind a sportbike, too though. Considered buying an older 600 or something, just to tool around with. They are fun!

But that doesn't mean overhead cams, liquid cooling, better fuel injection, bigger oilers, gear-mesh primaries, and other things don't need to be in them. So I'll take my Import Cruiser with all of the engine tech for now!

I had an '85 5.0L Cougar and an '89 3.8L Supercharged Cougar. Loved both of those cars!

And no, no mods. I'm just not into modding a 4 banger. A few grand more (the cost it would take to do anything decent to the car) and I could've had a 300 horsepower V6 mustang. Or even a gently used GT with the 5.0 in it. I bought the focus as an inexpensive commuter 4-door.

I may paint the calipers red to give it a little bit of an aggressive look, but not a lot of guys have the sport package (the Dealers don't often stock them for some reason, I had to special order mine) so it'll be a little unique.

Plus, I HATE the sound of a 4 cylinder fart-cannon. I've never found a decent sounding exhaust because the engines don't sound good. Subjective, I know. But, in MY opinion, sportbikes and 4-cylinder cars should not have loud exhausts! LOL. (But I'm sure people think that V-Twins and V8's with loud exhaust sound like crap too; but I love it!). And if you wanna do any modding, you pretty much need to open up the exhaust.

I almost have (ordered it, waiting for it to come in) a 2014 Focus SE w/ sport package and 5 speed manual. Tuxedo black. Will look like this (this guy has his configured just like mine);

IMG_0685.jpg

I actually prefer the SE Sport wheels to the old SVT wheels. They kind of have a little bit of a Shelby flair to them. They are a charcoal painted wheel, on a very metallic black. Looking forward to it!

To be honest I haven't owned a 'cool car' in a while. I'm more into my motorcycles. If I could afford both I'd have both! LOL. But, I think I enjoy the motorcycle and the traveling more than I'd enjoy a 'cool car'.

I'll admit I use Adams, its why I don't post my details here since the products are not sold here, but I also like to try out stuff from other companies as well. ONR for clay lube and door jams, Pinnacle WW w/Carnuba, this stuff is awesome btw, various CG soaps, 3D stuff, Meguairs M105/205, D300/D301 etc..

Anyways, this guy seems like a jerk, I'm nowhere near pushy like him. I keep to myself and when I'm asked about my details I usually focus on the process and techniques rather than what products I'm using. Most people I talk to don't even know about the 2B wash so harking on about specific products won't do anyone any good.

P.S. I also own that wax he showed you, lol. :doh: I don't like admitting the price because I don't think it's worth nearly that much, its more like a 100-150 dollar wax, but some of of the proceeds go to a good cause so I thought that was worth it. That container is pretty cool though :o

Romans, those Focus' are pretty nice, rolling stock is pretty sharp already. I'm 43 and also don't like the "fart can" sound some 4 bangers have but I wish you could hear my CRZ inperson. I had the muffler removed, straight pipe installed and it sounds great, finished it off w/ a round-oval SS rolled tip, it pops and backfires on downshifts, I love it and its not loud, believe it or not but surely this may not be the case on all 4 bangers out there. If you've got a turbo'd 4 an exhaust is a must or again, no muffler at all is even better.

All this bike talk makes me throw this out too Roman, come on out to our Fall Dragon run next year, I think I've got Monica and her husband coming out with cars or bikes out of their stable! I will make a thread for this soon and will be pretty picky about who we'd like to have join us. I know its a public forum and public road but we'd rather have no "hot shoes" or D-bags join our run.

May have to consider it! Not too far from me but there's always the time issue; taking the time to get down there! I've actually not been to the dragon, though I'd definitely like to!

And yeah, I've heard some CRZ's. Not bad, but still not my style. The Focus'es I've heard, aawwffuulll. I THINK I'd hate the drone going down the highway but, maybe not since I don't mind it on my bike.

Here's what my bike sounds like;

Skip to about 1:00 for the good stuff. (And no, I'm not normally that obnoxious, but for the video and a little 0-60 run I was :) )

If your an avid enthusist the Dragon/Cherahola/Moonshiners/Devil's Triangle roads are a must do. Its not all about all out speed, your Focus would be a great car out there too but I'm sure you'd take the bike and if that's the case you might wanna stay off of the Devil's Triangle! The Skyway and Moonshiners roads are probably best for you and the Dragon is best on non-busy days (before Friday)
